Janice Dean the Weather Machine

Is Mr. Gore Nobel?

Happy Friday! Woohoo! We made it through another workweek. Can I tell you how excited I am to see so many of you are visiting (and commenting) on my Blog! After I announced it on Jane Skinner’s show yesterday, the hits went through the roof! And to all the regular GretaWire reader/contributors, I can’t thank you enough for spreading the love!

Alright, time to put on my serious news hat here … One of the big news items of the day is the awarding of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize to Al Gore and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for their work on Global Warming.

No doubt about it, this is a topic that we will be discussing for years and decades to come. I have my opinions about Global Warming, as do most weather folk, but I want to try and be balanced about what I write on this blog since it’s not my job to brew controversy for either side. But I have said before, and will say again that we have a long long way to go when it comes to forecasting the weather – and predicting climate change. We’re getting better, but how many times has your local forecaster said it was going to be sunny one day — and you all of a sudden get caught in a downpour. The earth is 4 billion years old. There are too many unanswered questions about our earth - and the atmosphere that surrounds us. It’s hard enough getting the 5 day forecast straight let alone what’s going to happen in the years and decades ahead of us.

I did watch Al Gore’s Inconvenient Truth, and it did scare me. It made me worry about our future and the future of generations to come with regard (or disregard) for the planet, however, there are some things in that film that are inaccurate or exaggerated. If you want to read more about what I believe to be some of the areas that Mr. Gore took some creative license on, here’s a link to an article that is worth reading before or after you watch and Inconvenient Truth.

I could go on about this hot topic (literally) but my job is try to bring fair and accurate daily forecasts to you, so I’ll leave the controversy to those who like to debate. J

My next blog, I promise will be about fun stuff! And I’ll answer some of your great questions too (along with letting you know who my mystery roommate is!) Stay tuned!

Thanks for the link.. I will read it now. My feeling is if there is even one non truth in the film, then he should not be qualified for the Nobel Peace Prize ~

Janice… this is an intense subject. I read the link, thanks for giving it to us. As for the Nobel Peace Prize… when was the last time a Conservative Republican won that award? Who are the people voting on who wins? Are they made up of a group of people who are liberal and have an agenda?

I heard a while back, not sure what state, I think Rhode Island, where this book/movie is required of the students to read/watch and report on in order to pass their class.

I agree with the parent who claims that having this film used as curriculum is brainwashing the very naive and impressionable children. I might even go as far as to say that this is just one small part of the big picture of liberal thinking trying to form the young minds of today so when they grow up there’s a change in society for the future.

I’m tired of the mainstream media giving one sided information. it’s unbalanced and deceitful.

JD,

According to Nobel’s will, the Peace Prize should be awarded “to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses”.

Even though I commend Al Gore for shedding more light on the subject of “global warming”, what in the world does it have to do with “fraternity between nations, abolition or reduction of standing armies and/or promotion of peace congresses”?

A.M – this is an excellent and informative comment. I’m so glad you included the actual quote of who the ideal candidate should be. I think sometimes they have gone way off course in who they nominate (and sometimes who they award to…) I found this interesting paragraph in Wikipedia (can you tell I love Wikipedia!)

“Nominations for the Prize may be made by a broad array of qualified individuals, including former recipients, members of national assemblies and congresses, university professors (in certain disciplines), international judges, and special advisors to the Prize Committee. In some years as many as 199 nominations have been received. The Committee keeps the nominations secret and asks that nominators do the same. Over time many individuals have become known as “Nobel Peace Prize Nominees”, but this designation has no official standing[3]. Nominations from 1901 to 1955, however, have been released in a database.[4] When the past nominations were released it was discovered that Adolf Hitler was nominated in 1939 by Erik Brandt, a member of the Swedish Parliament. Brandt retracted the nomination after a few days.[5] Other infamous nominees included Joseph Stalin and Benito Mussolini. However, since nomination requires only support from one qualified person (e.g., a history professor), these unusual nominations do not represent the opinions of the Nobel committee itself.”

Tell Fox News that they need to put an RSS feed on your blog! I want to read it but don’t want to have to keep coming back to see if you’ve written anything!
Really appreciated what you’ve written here! I was shocked that Al Gore was even considered for the Nobel Peace prize, let alone that he won. What IS this world coming to?! Yes, I believe we should do all we can to take care of the planet we live on, but….just can’t accept everything said about global warming.
Thanks for your honest comments here!

A Janice Dean fan!

Lynn,
If I can figure out how to get an RSS on this blog, I will! I’m just happy I’ve learned how to post, and now how to write back! haha!) But I’ll ask the blog-masters if this is possible. Does Greta have one?

Janice,
I have given up thinking any conservative will win a Nobel. The earth is far too old and we are way too young to figure it out. My opinion is it is God ordained. But that aside, Texas had a unbelievable cool summer. I can not remember it ever being that cool. I am all about saving energy and resources, mainly because I save money first. The climate thing is just hard for me to accept as gospel, too many influences. We have cattle, and all that methane gas is killing us. But then I wonder do buffaloes emit methane? Just too hard for me to figure it out!

Comment by Janet

Must admit that I really don’t know that much on the global warming thing, Nobel Prize for that I’m not so sure.

Comment by Troy

One convenient truth: The climate is getting warmer. The earth has been going through a hot/cold cycle for millions of years. 30 years ago, these same people were warning us of another ice age…make up your mind!

As far as a Nobel Prize? Two words, Puh Leez! Why don’t we give one to Batman or Superman for their peace keeping efforts in Gotham City and Metropolis? Didn’t Jimmy Carter get one too? How lame is that?

Comment by Carolyn from Little Axe

Al Gore was/is/and always will be a JERK!

The Nobel Prize is a JOKE. Why would anyone take it seriously after these last few years?

Comment by Betty

Do you believe the scientists who say the weather changes are cyclical? That’s easier for me to grasp because the warm cycles started before the automobiles, jets and other things being blamed for the warming trend?

Thirteen years from now is suppose to be the start of another cooling trend.

As far as Al Gore, I think he is a hypocritical jerk who won’t give up his mansion living, private jet, (HE’S too important) lifestyle, yet wants everyone else to conserve.

Go away Gore; YOU could use some trimming down – ride a bike – YOU need it!

Hey Betty!
Yes, I am a big believer in weather cycles…and the old saying “what goes up must come down” I know that sounds so simple, but in weather everything eventually balances itself out.

Janice you no doubt can tell us and VP Gore more about this subject…..I know notta but if it is true what he says then why does he not practice what he preaches.
Re the Nobel prize…. Jimmy Carter won too and look at his presidency and the shameful way he talks now against our country….

I hate to be negative… not my way but …….

Comment by Lisa S.

Hi Janice, Greta sent me over from her blog…

I am not sure what the Presidency or being Dem. or Rep. has to do with the Nobel Peace Prize.

Global warming is an issue for planet earth…the whole planet, not just the U.S.

Janice I love watching your show, can’t always catch it, but your smile and happy stance is wonderful. Marriage certainly agrees with you.

Comment by kate

well now that he has the peace prize maybe he’ll leave the presidency alone. *cough*

Comment by Ruth

I think we should take care of the planet as well as we can, I think some things will happen regardless of our actions. (i.e. volcanos erupting, etc. ) I do not worry about it. As for the Nobel, I no longer respect it.

Comment by Janie

While I agree that prediction is very difficult, for that reason, I fear that what Al Gore and the majority of scientists are predicting may well be under estimated. I am glad to see some positive US leadership acknowledged internationally in the person of Al Gore.

I am a frequent Greta blog visitor….first visit here…I will come back as I see you not only do the weather but have comments on news….nice site

I am pleased that Al Gore won the Nobel Peace Prize. At least it cannot be taken away from him like the 2000 Presidential Election, which he also won.

Comment by Ron Malone

Lets see , Jimmy Carter , Yasser Arafat and now Al Gore…..

The prize used to mean something , for the past 30 years it has become totally politicized and has no prestige associated with it…Too bad !!

Comment by Margo, Columbus, OH

Now I’m thinkin’ the Nobel Peace Prize is political & a SHAM !!!!
