Janice Dean the Weather Machine

Greg Kelly doing the weather? You decide!

Hi again!

I have an important poll I need you to be a part of!

Steve Doocy is on vacation for the rest of the week, so Greg Kelly and I are helping to fill his shoes. (He is so talented doing news and weather, that it takes two of us to replace him!)

So I joked with Greg as I was walking out of the Fox & Friends studio to see if he wanted to also do the weather tomorrow morning … he seemed intrigued with the idea, but with a slight apprehension – like he needed some encouragement from the fans! I told him I would create a poll on the Machine Blog to see if you guys would like to see him do weather on the green screen!

So, here it is — your chance to see Greg do some weather presenting!

VOTE BELOW IN THE COMMENT AREA! I’ll tally up the comments later! Either choose one of the two:

- Yes, I would like to see Greg do weather

- No, I would rather look out the window.

Sounds good to me to have Gregg do the weather.

Hey, Janice:

I think it would be good to have Gregg do the weather. He is a USMCR pilot and does know something about meteorology since he is a pilot, so why not? Perhaps he can give a bit of aviation weather.

Say, Janice, perhaps you can expand on the weather to actually include aviation AND maritime weather…sort of expanding on FNC’s weather reporting. It will mean more viewers and more information to help our views who fly and sail.

No way. The Machine is the only green screener for me. =)

Not a lot in the way of weather going on up here today. We are getting a lot of moisture spilling over the ridge and if you look at satellite you can clearly see the lee side cirrus and the ridge line of the Rocky Mountain Front.

Well off to Brief…take care everyone.

Comment by Gail

I would watch Greg do anything, but the weather is a good start.

Comment by Tom (retired NWS)

Greg is obviously a smart guy and could do an acceptable weather presentation, but I just don’t see him as a “weather guy”.

Janice do you have other “news aspirations”. :>) If so, I’m with you.

Definitely let Greg do the weather. He’s good at everything else, so I’m sure the weather would be a piece of cake for him. I’d even like to see him do it as Elvis!

Comment by Janice Dean

Hey Gwen!
I saw Greg in the elevator later on in the morning, and he sounded like he didn’t want to do it anymore! we need to convince him he’d be great doing the weather!

Hey Sal,

I think that is a good idea about the aviation and maritime weather, but there are tons of websites out there for those who fly and sail. A lot are NOAA based sites. And I don’t think the average FoxNews viewer knows what BKN005 BKN030 OVC050 means or needs to know that there is icing and turbulence from 020/150 or needs to know the wave heights. Even the Weather Channel does some aviation and maritime forecasts. The weather on the news stations and the Weather Channel are, excuse my expression, ‘dumbed down’ for the casual viewer. I think that information is cool but not for normal folk. But if you need that information NOAA’s aviation weather webpage has AIREPS, SIGMETS, PIREPS even some proged charts. And the National Buoy Center has all you need for maritime forecasts.

Greg is our man. He would do great with the weather. I bet he can dance. Let’r rip Greg.

I vote for him TO DO the weather. I’d watch.

Hey, Janice:

Wow, you dancing, ravishing weather babe, you! :D :D

Of course, I will not suggest that you dance in your underwear since you are a married lady, but I can fantasize (Mr. Dean, I beg your pardon, of course). ;)

I still think that it would be Ok for Greg to do the weather, but of course, not on a permanent basis. Janice can never be permanently replaced as far as I am concerned. I must confess that I also enjoy Domenica Davis doing the weather, too.

BTW-I have a Sal question. Just a few moments ago, Janice, you mentioned crosswinds. I would like to know, what happens when crosswinds intersect? Do they simply collide at the point of intersection and bounce off of each other? Do they form a “solid” wall of wind? Do they create a new wind current and what direction does that new current take (up and down, diagnolly?) Can intersecting cross winds help form tornadoes?

YES PLEASE!!! How funny would dancing Greg be- I know he would NEVER do that! He’s way too smooth for that :)

Comment by Ed Feeney

Hey lady, you were really KICKIN IT. It didn’t even matter that you looked like you were THE QUEEN OF THE DISCO SCENE. I’ll bet you that your vinyl collection of the Bee-Gee’s and Donna Summer are worth alot of money right now. Im embarrassed to admit that I missed F&F last night but you have to understand that 3AM is 3AM on the west coast here. So unfortunatly I had to watch you GET YOUR GROOVE ON in your video clip. Im still slapping myself for missing the show because in the clip you said something like, THERE WILL BE SOME MORE DANCING LATER BUT I WON’T BE IN MY UNDERWEAR THEN. This makes me think I may have missed a classic last night. Janice you really look like your 2 much fun.

As far as Mr Kelly doing the weather. AH NO WAY. I’ve thought if maybe he put on a really hot looking skirt and heels then maybe but unless hes willing to do that I think Mr Kelly needs to stay where he is now.

Yep, I am with Greg doing the weather! I know you do it best, but he can try it!

Comment by Wendy, Los Angeles

No J.D., you do it….Greg always seems to be a bit stiff to me – I like him, but he always seems to me like he needs to lighten up a little

Hey, David:

You have an interesting point about the average news weather and the Weather Channel being geared for the average viewer, not to mention the numerous sites you have indicated.

Oh, well…..

Thanks for listing those sites for me. They will be interesting to look at.

I can understand that Greg might be uncomfortable doing the weather, however I am certain he can ‘channel’ ,pun intended, Elvis. Perhaps Elvis and Janice could do a weather duet.

Yes let Greg Kelly do the weather. If he wants too.

Hey Janice,

That was fabulous!!! You should’ve shown some of your moves on that flight to Arizona, you might have gotten more favorable seating ;-)

Looks like you had a great time. It was very nice to meet you and your sweetie, you make a nice couple.

Comment by Janice Dean

Hey Valentine!
I don’t think dancing would’ve helped me on that flight! It was nice to meet you too! Thank you for watching and writing too!

Janice –

Make Greg do the weather whilst dancing to the music of …

The Chicken Dance …

His Gregettes would be unable to control their collective giddyness …

Comment by Janice Dean

Tiamat,
We can only imagine that ever happening….sigh….I might not even be able to get him to do the weather let alone the chicken dance!

To Sal,

Crosswinds are relative to the runway. If you have a runway with a heading of 030, NE, and wind blowing from 320, NW, then you have a 90 dregee crosswind. Most runways limits are around 20 to 30 degrees of crosswinds, meaning that some aircraft might not be able to land or take off on that runway. Also that a reason most airports have an active and an inactive runway. Depending on the direction the wind is blowing determines what runway is open. Most primary runways are aligned with the prevaling local wind.

Hope this helps

David

Yes, please have Greg try the weather.
We love to see him squirm, and it will give Rick something to tease him about this weekend!

Comment by Janice Dean

Catherine…I hope we can get him up there tomorrow. Please know that I tried my best if he decides not to! You can only ask a man a few times before he gives you a look that you’ve gone too far! HEE HEE

Hey, David:

Thanks for the explanation. I will have to study it a bit to understand it fully since my question really dealt with winds colliding in general and not on runways. But it does make sense since takeoffs are into the wind for lift.

Say, David and/or Tom:

Is military weather the same as civilian weather? Does the Air Force anaylize the weather differently than the NWS since military flights and missions are involved? Does the USAF WX look for weather patterns that the NWS does not?

Sal

Yes Greg should do the weather. Also can we get Greg some paper so he doesnt have to write on his hands

Comment by Larry Bunker

If Greg is doing the weather I’m Going to the showers. Besides I’m looking for E.D. Hill

Comment by Tom (retired NWS)

Sal,

Regarding your comment of USAF vs NWS weather I tried to answer and I put it on a later post.

Colliding winds are a bit different, they of course occur in a generally benign way with frontal passages etc, where you have winds that “collide” but I think you’re talking about something a little more dramatic…like from a microburst, or perhaps what sometimes occurs with merging severe thunderstorms.

I’m sorry I can’t be more specific, but I’m not sure exactly what you’re looking for.

Perhaps David, or Janice can be of more help.

Tom

Hey, Tom:

Thanks for the explanation. I was simply wondering that since wind is a force in motion (as I see it) what would happen if cross winds collide, like two cars hitting each other head on or side to side, and what would the force be like at the point of intersection.

Would the winds bounce off of each other, or would they come to a “standstill” or cancel each other out a bit.

Sal

Comment by Tom (retired NWS)

Sal,

Ok I think I know what you’re asking, but it’s almost an impossibility for strong winds to collide other than with merging thunderstorms which can then create serious problems, but on a large scale you’d have to be looking at 2 hurricanes headed at each other(not likely), or perhaps an unusually strong warm front moving against a Derecho event in the midwest; again not very likely.
Because of the way things work it’s unlikely that winds of any strength would oppose each other, rather than thunderstorms merging….then you have a good likelihood of severe weather. And no they wouldn’t cancel each other out…it would probably become some type of downburst, or possibly tornadic activity.
