“The Greatest Scam in History”
So I’m looking at the news headlines this morning, (I must confess the Drudge Report is my favorite!) and found this very interesting online article about the man who founded the Weather Channel denouncing Global Warming and calling it “The Greatest Scam in History”.
This is pretty gutsy, and worthy of a peak. Especially with all the controversy surrounding one of their contributors Dr. Heidi Cullen (their climate expert and a scientist formerly with the National Center for Atmospheric Research) who is really pushing the Global Warming theories – to the point of saying forecasters that don’t acknowledge Global Warming should be stripped of their AMS seal (seal of approval from the American Meteorological Society)
What do you think? Once again, I have my own opinions about Global Warming, but my job is to deliver a fair and balanced weather report. Having said that, I would love to hear what you think of this article, and did Noel Sheppard cross the line?
More blogging later!
jd

It is about time someone with a respectable name came out and said this. I also have strong opinions. I know is some places the climate is changing…especially in the Alaska. Near Fairbanks when the Tanana River freezes they put a huge tripod thing with a bell out on the river and the people can sign up and guess the date of the ‘official’ start of break-up is. If you have never lived that far north you know they only have 3 seasons, summer (also Construction), winter, and break-up. This date is getting earlier each year. Also freezing rain didnt used to be such a problem in Anchorage…but its happening more often.
So there are changes occurring…but that’s what is supposed to happen. Things change. Glaciers melt. Also do not trust climate models!!! Models are only as good as the data us humans put into it. Our weather models that we use are only good for 3 days out or so, maybe 5 but usually 3.
This doesn’t mean to stop recycling or trying to save energy…that is something we all should do. We all should reduce and reuse.
Look at what you made me do Janice. Way to open that can.
Have a good day.
Keep that can open David!!! I really appreciate your comments.
The greatest scam in history is not Global Warming to me…its something else but I will not get into that here.
Janice,
Over 30 years of operational meteorology…during that time I have known 100’s if not 1000’s of folks both in the NWS and media….and I don’t know one who believes this is anything more than part of a natural cycle.
Tom, you are so right. I like to post these articles because I just find there are not enough people out there standing up for the other side of global warming. Hollywood, the media etc. are all over this subject, but I don’t think they present the other side very well or clearly. There seems to be a “fear factor” out there that if you go against the “popular way of thinking” you are putting yourself in the line of fire. (Which is why I’m trying to keep my commentary at a minimal) -but am so glad you and David are speaking out as people who legitimately study weather patterns and look at the atmosphere as true professionals – not people just jumping on a bandwagon to be hip or “cool” — no pun intended.

Too bad Mr. Coleman no longers runs the Weather Channel because he could then remove
Dr. Cullen. When she first came out with her ridiculous statement about removing the AMS seal from those who didn’t believe in Global Warming I went to her blog and she was hammered…at the time I visited it there had been about 20K hits almost overwhelmingly against her theories.
Of course its become very chic to talk about Global Warming…and of course it’s usually done by some well-known scientist like Al Gore,(he did invent the internet didn’t he?), Sean Penn, George Clooney, or perhaps Susan Sarandan.
I have no doubt that their scientific credentials are impeccable. Right….and I’ll be having an award winning movie on my resume and day now. :>)
Oh, you’ve openned the flood gates here Janice. :>)
Thanks for the venting place,
Tom
Good morning, Janice and my fellow Machinites:
I think that we must look back to the beliefs of indigenous people who truly feel that the Earth is indeed a living entity. Like a person, the Earth goes through changes and cycles. The Earth has had Ice Ages, and then the temperature heats up. We have had bitter winters, harsh summers, then mild winters, harsh springs, etc.
While the addition of chemicals into the air and water certainly can contribute to some changes, I do not think that those additions are totally responsible, or not even largely responsible. Remember that the Earth does have a way of recycling itself whether it be through gentle means, or violent upheavals. For example, remember some years ago that scientists discovered a hole in the Ozone layer up in the Artic? Sometime later, that hole disappeared. What happened? Either those photos were misinterpreted (that can happen) or…could the Earth have healed itself as it has been doing for years via cyclic changes?
This recent Global Warming fear, I think is largely, a type of PC/Socialist/make America pay agenda. India and China said that they need energy, and they are not going to pay for anything. Poorer nations cannot afford to pay the price for anything, so that leaves only developed nations to pay.
Indeed, as we look at the various celebrities who practice the environmental “Do as I say and not as I do” in terms of their own energy expending habits, various environmental investments (remember Al Gore’s carbon credits where I believe, but not certain, that the company he invests in gives him huge returns if I understood Rush Limbaugh’s analysis correctly some time ago-correct me if I am wrong here).
What I find most disturbing, is what Dr. Heidi Cullen of the Weather Channel stated that anyone who does not agree with the Global Warning threat being legitimate should get their seal revoked. I don’t remember her name, but I did hear her say that. In other words…Believe and obey, or be excommunicated from the AMS. See where this is leading to? Fortunately, no one has taken her advice seriously.
BTW-Who needs Cullen when we have Janice and Domenica, too, for that matter?
Weather should be weather, not some political tool. The danger of mixing scientific fact with political ideology is too great, especially when political ideology becomes political desparation.
Indeed, even though I believe in a good, clean environment (yes, I tend to be a “Green”) we must remember that as society progresses, industry must continue to florish so that man can florish. Civilization is essentially geared to oil dependancy to make our machines run. We simply cannot switch that off overnight.
We must allow and encourage companies to begin creating ways to tap into solar, wind, and hydro driven energy sources without the threat of taking their revenues away, and without the threat the Socialist minded environmentalists and Socialist members of Congress standing ready to sue those companies for WHATEVER reason.
In the meantime as new and alternate energy sources are being examined, we must begin to definately explore our home grown energy resources. And that means drilling off in the Gulf Coast (China is doing that right now and is probably taking some of our oil), and in Alaska, and mine for more coal. And if the cybernetic, multieared, three toed, infrared subterrainian flying squirrel has to find a new place to go to the bathroom because of drilling and mining…THEN TOO DAMN FLAMING BAD!
And finally, I do not think that Noel Sheppard crossed the line by reporting what John Coleman said.
Sal
Sal-
Good stuff!
You need your own blog!
Janice,
But I am hip and cool. Well maybe several years ago. :>)
Tom
You’re a regular on this blog – so you are still very HIP AND COOL!
It sucks that helping the planet has become so political. But when environmental movements get in the way of production and making money, clashes occur. Everyone agrees that we should recycle and not waist energy. So I think the ‘Green’ movement a great idea, why not help the planet. But I think the reason to ‘go Green’ is getting lost in the Global Warming debate. Its such a fine line in advancement in energy use and being environmentally friendly. Anywho…
If you all have time first check out the low that will come ashore in British Columbia on Friday. It is as deep as a hurricane. Also on Saturday a low forms off the coast of the New England and may develop into a Nor’easter. The central low pressure or that system is also really low. Gotta love winter time.
Good Times,
David!
I’ve been watching that possible Nor’easter all week long. Today it didn’t look to promising to move close enough to us to start “hyping”…and yes, the Gulf of Alaska is revved up!! Pretty awesome stuff. I love nor’easters. I have to admit, I’m glad I don’t do local weather, because there is SOOOO much pressure to get that forecast right when it comes to “blockbuster” or “bust”
Wow Dervish,
Serious venting…good for you!
Anyone with a conscience…and as a boomer we’ve been accused of a “use it all…we don’t care” generation is mistaken about us. I care greatly about the envirionment we live in and my children and grand children will have to continue to live in. I do my part has well as I can without climbing up a tree to make sure it isn’t cut down.
And I started practicing “catch and release” many years ago when I starting getting divorced….sorry I just couldn’t resist….all my ex’s live in Texas. I’m just kidding!!!!! Humor folks.
Res ipsa loquitor.
How about this? I did hear this affect of global warming. First a quiz, what is the driving force behind weather? I will give you a sec………………………………………..Temperature discontinuity. The poles are cold and the tropics are hot and the clash of cold and warm air is the basic reason behind weather. That’s also why there are jet streams. So the theory states that if the global temps increase the temperature at the poles will increase at a faster rate than at the tropics and this will lead to a reduction of sever storms and the frequency of deep low pressures and outbreaks of cold air from the artic. What about that? I don’t remember where I heard it but it kinda makes sense.
Also I think I have mentioned it before…with the opening of the Northwest Passage…you better start buying land in northern Alaska and Canada while it is cheap.
Taker Easy,
Janice,
You are too kind, Hip and Cool still…can I get some type of certificate??? :>)
Tom
I’ll have to work on one. We’ll call it the Weather Machine’s Seal of Approval for Hip and Cool people!
Noel Sheppard hasn’t crossed the line, Dr. Heidi Cullen has.
There are many opinions on weather there is actual global warming and if so if it is cyclical, which I tend to believe, or man made.
Wendy
Hey, Janice and Tom:
Wow, thanks for the compliment! Coming from you guys, I take it as a deep compliment.
Tom:
I tend to protect trees the old fashion way…I “mark off territory.” LOL
Hey, David:
Thanks for the heads up on the low pressure coming to BC this Friday and the possibility of a Nor’easter this Saturday. I used to reside in New England, so I know from experience how storms can hit that area.
Sal
And, yes, it does suck that the environment has become so political. As I said in my post here, it is dangerous to mix scientific fact with political ideology. Look at Janice’s situation…she will become a target if she vents the way we do (it is bad enough that FNC is so hated by too many people here-in fact, because I watch FOX it cost me a date-more about that later).
Not only was this a good read, but I read all the attached articles on similar topics including John Coleman’s full article.
I have to admit that before I started coming to your blog, JD, that I was one of the many people that never questioned any of the ‘facts’ being reported. I guess I assumed that ALL THESE PEOPLE from SO MANY different outlets couldn’t all be wrong or misrepresenting the facts to me. I appreciate that you have now given me and others a place to read the other side of the story which I never knew existed.
Hey, Janice and Tom:
Thanks! Coming from you guys, I take that as a deep compliment!
Whoops! Sorry for the repetition of my thanking Janice and Tom, but it just appeared on the site! I originally posted it at 4:15 today, so I thought that it might not get posted.
Sorry again!
Sal,
You’re right, Janice could take some hits if she becomes too “political”, but there are 10 times as many folks watching FNC than any other news channel so she’ll continue to have a huge audience.
As I said good venting…and I might add venting is good. :>)
Tom
Hey, Tom:
Yes, you are right about the numerous viewers, so Janice will always have a huge audience. It is just ashame that she has to keep low key about the Global Warming issue.
It is incredible how many people here do not like FNC!
Well, we will just have to stand up for our favorite station and jump to Janice’s defense when need be.
As I stated earlier, because I watch FNC, it cost me a date (she refused to go out because I watch FNC!!!)
Oh, well…..
Sal
Sal,
Talk about shallow…no date because you watch FNC…I’d have to say you’re better off because of it. In fact I’d have to say that was a bit more than shallow.
They don’t like FNC? Of course Flushing NY is not a bit like Texas. I went there once(well not Flushing, but Brooklyn and Staten Island and then the obligatory visit to the Village, and we’re talking like 37, 38 years ago) and was shocked by the prices…besides that it gets cold up there too doesn’t it???? :>)
I’ve got to have warm temps. :>)
Tom
Hey, Tom:
Yes, NYC women can be difficult when it comes to dating (notwithstanding the fact that I am not a ladies man). But, here in what I refer to as the Peoples’ PC and Sensitive Republic of NY, I encounter MANY people (men, as well as women) who cannot tolerate FNC! Well, NYC is a very liberal/socialist type city so it is not surprising.
Yes, prices in the Village are quite up there. Apartments are so expensive, you have to rob a bank to pay the rent. But, it is trendy to be in an overpriced apartment and purchase overpriced stuff in the Village.
And yes, it does get incredibly cold up here, but not as bad as in New England.
While I enjoy seasonal changes, I much prefer warm temps, too. You are lucky to be residing down south! God bless Texas, the great state that gave us E.D. Hill!
Sal
Sal,
You have no idea how refreshing it is to hear from someone like you, a New Yorker and your sentiments. If your Governor gives drivers licenses to illegals I’m taking the first flight to Australia. My family has been in America since the 1600’s…in Texas since 1870ish. There hasn’t been a war that my family hasn’t been a part of…including all of my sons….3…who are either serving now or are vets. Because of this I believe I have some vested interest in this country and I hate to see it being torn apart.
Thank you Sal,
Tom
It is 7am on this Saturday morning and I am enjoying Janice Dean the Weather Machine in the quiet of my house in NJ. Global warming is I believe the greatest scam in history. The question i would ask the “experts” would be; “what is the relationship between global warming media speak and the softening world economy”?. It is so obvious that all this insanity and fear propagated by the self appointed and self anointed achieves two things; 1) a virus that eats away at the enthusiasm that must be present for capitalism to thrive and 2) creates the gloom that also must be present for the extreme left to continue to rule the Democrats and of course take the white house back.
Hey, Tom:
Wow, what can I say? Thanks for the compliment!
Now, more than ever I am delighted that my ex-boss baptised me as an honorary Texan.
And, of course, thank you and your family for serving our still great and free nation.
Sal
I saw that too! My hubby and I were so thankful for a comment with such “real class” behind it.
Will admit Gore is certainly way down my list on people to pay attention to anyway.
We recycle some. I can’t imagine it being mandatory like I heard it is in NY state. Is that true?
We do paper, plastic and cardboard and believe me that covers so much here. Oh batteries too.
Glad to see you back. I did enjoy that vacation with you though on grounds we covered once.
