Santa Anas and Fun with Sewage!

The Santa Ana winds are planning a comeback tonight into tomorrow as high pressure builds over the Great Basin after a storm system moves east. The event should be short-lived, but it’s enough time to get anxious about fire danger. Winds could gust anywhere from 40 to 50 mph through those canyons and passes. Prayers again going out to all those who live in the area and have to deal with this time and time again. I’ll keep you posted today and tomorrow as to how hard those winds will blow.

Meantime, in our “Save the Planet” file, I stumbled upon this little gem: The world’s largest plant devoted to purifying ahhhem…our toilet flushes! Don’t read if you’ve just eaten breakfast – but once you’re fully digested, this is actually a good-news story!

I’m sure there are many jokes we could make here, but hey – bottom line:  just don’t tell me where the water is coming from – I don’t want to know!

Janice, that is gross. I hope I don’t ever have to go to Ca. and drink their water. May be a new trend all the U.S.

Yeah I have heard of the recycling of waist water before. I know or I thought they did that in places like New York and other bigger cities. It makes sense to me. The water on this planet…is what is here…it isn’t going away and it will always be here. So in actuality we should never run out of water….we just have to find ways to recycle it.

Hope the day is treating you well,

Janice,
Love your coverage of the Santa Anas as well as your great coverage of all weather conditions (dances included). For those of us who live in Apple Valley (aka High Desert but still part of Southern California) could you shrink the map enough to include us in the data when talking about the bad winds. We usually note that we get the winds a bit before they arrive in the lower passes.

Sincerely,

Tom and Joan

How is out there today Tom and Joan? I tried to zoom in a little more on the map to reflect the wind advisories from Ventura to Riverside county…winds are over 40 mph right now…

Hey, Janice:

Hmmmm…I don’t know about this one. Like one of the representatives said-we really don’t know how safe the water will be. In the USVI, they desalinate sea water via various filtration systems for the hotels, while many of the homes gather their water in rain barrels (shades of L’il Abner!).

David:
I agree that our water will always be here, so it can be recycled. I would not favor the recycling of toilet water, but desalination should work well. NY does not recycle toilet water. During a water shortage, then Mayor Koch had authorized the use of Hudson River water with an increase of Fluorides and other treatments for us to drink and mutate.

Hey, Janice:

I have a programing question for you…How does a broadcast meteorologist decide which weather reports get reported. Aside from emergencies and disasters, how is it decided to emphasize the weather of one city over another?

Sal, unfortunately doing national weather, and usually only about one minute to a minute 30 to deliver a forecast, we have to concentrate on the bad stuff. I wish I could do a good-news forecast everyday! Maybe I should do that here on the blog…

Mutate is right. But I just remember in college our biology professor telling us that bigger cities recycled waist what by putting some sorta bacteria into the vat of waist and it breaks down all the bad stuff into ultimately drinkable or at least useable water. Thats probably really simplified but my knowledge is very limited. The best tap water I have had was when we lived in Alaska. Anchorage gets its water from Eklunta Glacier. It was really nice.

Here is a website from GE http://www.gewater.com/what_we_do/water_scarcity/water_reuse.jsp

Take care everyone =)

Hey, Janice:

David:

Yes, as a matter of fact, bacteria has been used to destroy harmful waists.

In our very own bodies, bacteria keeps us alive by helping us digest food, regulating body chemistry, etc. On the other hand, since bacteria in us is body part specific, if let us say liver bacteria decides to move to the stomach, or to the lungs, then we could die from that.

Indeed, if all of the bacteria in our bodies would disappear, that means we would die and then we could not watch Janice on FNC!!!!

When cleaning up oil spills, bacteria has been experimented with to clean up the oil sludge from the sea. Have not heard much about it being used recently, however.

Thanks for the GE link!

Sal
