Smurfs are 50?!?

images.jpg

Ok, I must post this milestone.

The Smurfs are 50 years old this week. I was a huge Smurfs fan in the 80s. Owned a lot of the little figurines and stuffed toys, and enjoyed the television program as well. I am SHOCKED that the little blue guys , and Smurfette are 50! Papa Smurf must be pretty darn old too then. And one question that has had me flummoxed all these years…why was there just one Smurfette?  Ugh. I feel old.

They are 50?!!?….Oy…

Oh isnt it something when milestones remind you how old you are??….This year it struck me I have now lived longer than Elvis Presley!!….

And it then really struck me of how young he was when he died ( I remember that day when the news broke of his death)

Another thing that was an odd thing to hear this year…That this year’s incoming college freshmen have never lived in a world w/o the internet..and they ever saw Johnny Carson live on the Tonight Show…

But what really freaks me out is that there are now doctors practising medicine younger than me….That is freaky!!

You’re only old as you feel Dawn! Some days I feel like I’m 80…but others I feel like 5! :)

I LOVED the Smurfs. They were so great. It’s hard to believe they’re 50. I didn’t even know they existed before the 80s.

Janice,

Whaaaaat!! I am older than the Smurfs.. ( only 1 year)…I don’t know if that makes me happy or sad…maybe a little of both…

my kids loved watching them too…but my son’s favorite show was the Dukes of Hazzard..he thought he was a Duke…and by his driving now I think he still does..lol..

Well now that I have dated myself..I am going to put myself in granny- gear and get something accomplished today…

Happy 50 to the Smurfs!!!
Have a Smurfy Day …deb in tn

50??!!! And all this time I thought they were my cartoon from the 80’s. Didn’t know they came before I did. Wow. I watched the cartoon religiously, had the figurines (actually, a couple of weeks ago I found a store selling a ton of them) and even owned (I should say own…) a German record of the Schtroumpfs.

I was always thrown by Smurfette being the only female, too. Was she incredibly lucky or incredibly unfortunate? Hmmm. Remember when Gargamel built a wooden clone of her? Awww, Smurfs. Saturday morning cartoons haven’t been the same since the 80’s. :(

Does anyone else have the theme song stuck in their head now?

Comment by Janice Dean

Wow, Amanda you are a bigtime smurf-fan! A Schtoumpfs record? You rock! I forget how the song goes…maybe that’s a good thing!

Yeah I loved the Smurf as well. Grumpy was my favorite.

Your answer to my question was kinda what I thought…thanks for the answer. I almost applied of a job at WSI last summer because my reenlistment was coming up. Doing national weather would be cool because you all don’t have to go so much in depth…but you all are on TV so you all take the brunt of the ‘feedback’ from the regular people. Weather firms are okay if they provide climo stuff but for them to put out there own hurricane track or weather warnings is kinda harmful. We put out our own warnings and they dont have to jive with the NWS but our AOR is usually a little bit smaller. But when we do our briefings, sometimes, the Col’s refer to the newspaper’s or the weather channel if we differ too much. It’s silly.

Anyway….take care.

Hey David,
People are generally pretty nice regardless of the potentially wrong forecasts I might give! For instance, there’s a good chance of more snow for parts of Alabama and Georgia..including Atlanta, so I hope it comes true for the kid’s sakes! ;) Someone got a little rude in the elevator earlier though…”Hey weathermachine. This weather sucks. I blame you!” He was joking, but it still sounded mean…

I haven’t seen Smurfs in forever. However the cold and rain down here in middle Georgia is gonna make my skin just as blue.

Sounds like most of us are dating ourselves…. :D

But that is ok….I’m not sure if I envy what our younger counter-parts have to deal with these days…If anything I wish them well….Cause I am not sure I want to be in their shoes….. :-O

Janice, I LOOOOVED the Schtroumpfs (their original name in French!)

If you admit you were a huge Smurfs fan in the early 80’s….I can confess I spent hours playing with my Smurf figurines in the 70’s!

Back then, there was no Smurf TV show in France; only the great Belgian comic strips in which they originated (I was collecting all the books), one big movie out in the theaters and a multitude of little plastic figurines which are still sold nowadays! (just saw them last weekend at FAO Schwartz!!).

The best Christmas gift I ever received: a big mushroom-house for my Smurf figurines with a removable top!

I can’t believe my favorite little blue mischievous imps just turned…50!!!
FIFTY??!
I had no clue.
And yet they haven’t changed.

Well I even forgot la Schtroumpfette was originally a creation of the evil sorcerer Gargamel before Papa Smurf revamped her in…blonde!

To answer your question, THANK God there’s only one Smurfette! She already drives all of them crazy in love…imagine the impact of a hundred of Smurfettes in the village! :D

Plus you have to admit each of them is not defined by its gender but rather by its unique distinct personality trait (and remember: a stork delivered the only baby Smurf!!)

By the way, Janice, which one was your favorite Smurf??
And did you speak Smurf?!
Have you ever dressed as Smurfette for Halloween?!

I have to say Papa Smurf is my fav Guillaume. I have not dressed up as a smurf, but at my husband’s Halloween party two years ago there were two smurfs complete with blue makeup and little tails!

Loved the Smurfs as a kid. It was by far my mom’s favorite cartoon, even though she was a 30-something at that time. I still distincly remember my dad, who was a barber for 25 years actually had a little figurine of “Barber Smurf” in his shop.

Ah, memories …

Comment by Janice Dean

Barber Smurf! I love it!

I am a milestone plus five :D

O’Reilly gave the inventor of the hola hoop the title of Patriot last night–

guess what- I have one– purple– I bought it a few months ago to exercise with so my waist stays down– I am playing tug of war with the waist– I like being small– but it is so much harder now— more salads and less pasta– oh well– so true, so sad! :(
