Snow in the South!

That storm system out of the Gulf is now moving into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast bringing a wintry mix to areas that don’t typically see a lot of snow!

The mountains of northeast Georgia saw up to 3 inches of snow while other parts of Georgia also saw measurable snow including Atlanta! 0.4 inches was a record for the day, with higher amounts in the suburbs north of the city. This was the first time Atlanta has seen more than a trace of snow in 3 years!

Flights were cancelled at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport early this morning. Schools are also closed in more than a dozen counties in the Peach Tree state due to weather conditions. People were pretty excited about it from what I can tell…kids used what they could to make mini-snowmen!

We have winter weather advisories posted along the Mid-Atlantic. Washington D.C. could see a few inches of snow while the other big cities north of D.C. will see mainly rain.

The other big story is the cold arctic air that will be sinking in this weekend. Green Bay could be in for one of the coldest NFL Championship Games of all time as temperatures will be in the single digits, and the windchill will be unbearable! Yikes!

We’re also watching those Santa Ana winds which could gust up to 80 mph hour today…thanks to that big dome of High Pressure in the Great Basin.

Lots of weather to watch! Will keep you posted.

Yay, it snowed! It was fun while it lasted. Now it is just a rainy, wet slush outside. Being from the South, I can count number of times on one hand that it has snowed where I have lived.

Hey Apryl!
Pretty cool right? I heard kids were so excited. One of our makeup artists, Sandy is from the deep south and she says they usually get snow once every 7 years.

Didn’t Georgia have a drought here in the summer months?

Comment by Janice Dean

Yes, they are still technically into a major drought despite some relief from the last few storms.

Janice,

Well the snow in my south didn’t last long..last night snowed about an 1/2 inch..turned to sleet..temps dropped down in mid 20’s..ice..temps rise mid 30’s..light rain now..currently 40 degrees..the typical rollercoaster weather…

But the kids were happy..NO SCHOOL!

Drought conditions have improved here..my pond was down about 3 1/2 feet over the summer..now it is almost back to normal+++++….

Have a wonderful Thursday..deb in tn

Here in Southwest Virginia, we had nothing when I went to bed, which was around 2:30 or so this morning. But when I woke up at 8:00, there was snow everywhere, and it was still coming down! It started to taper off late this morning, and is now pretty much all gone. But it was just about the perfect storm, in the sense that it wasn’t too much snow, and it didn’t cause any power problems at all. It’s so beautiful to look at, and even more so this time around, because usually we get plenty of wind, which tends to prevent the snow from really accumulating. But there has been virtually no wind to speak of to this point, which is incredible for us here! I’d have to say that the weather folks got this one right, and I’d be a fool to complain :D

Hi Janice! My wife, Susi, and I love to watch your reports. We transplanted from Huntington Beach, CA to Medford, OR some time ago and discovered quickly, that the locals have an incredibly difficult time attempting to “forecast” weather or even “trends” here. It may be their equipment because oour “mountains”, here, are really “hills” as most of them are well under 5,000 feet. Thanks for your accuracy. Just a quick question; we understand you worked in Canada on air. Did that require you to speak more than one language? That could present some interesting problems, like which show to speak one and which show to speak the other. Oh yeah; just a point of interest. I wrote to Bill Hemmer a few months back when the bad fires were ravaging Southern CA. Since around the ’60’s, the “Wind’s” name has changed from Santanas to Santa Anas. Have you ever heard any reason why? The winds don’t “blow” from Santa Ana (or anywhere even close). Santa Ana means “Saint Ana”. Santana means “Evil” or “Devil” Wind. It’s not a point of contention or anything but just a curiosity. We, figuring you’re pretty smart, may have heard why the name change. Oh well … we’ll most likely all never find out. Any way, keep up the great work. You do a good job and we hope to continue seeing you for a long, long time. Roger and Suz. PS: We got a kick out of seeing you dance on Fox and Friends some time ago. Any more plans for that in the future? You’re pretty darned good at it. R and S
