Calmer Weather…and Springtime in Brooklyn!
Good morning everyone!
How was your weekend? Mine was too short! (as usual)…didn’t do too much either. Ran some errands, cleaned up, went to dinner Saturday night and then slept, read and watched too much television!
Weather-wise, we are into a much calmer weather pattern over the next few days. Parts of the southwest broke records on the weekends reaching close to, or past the century mark!
Over the next few days, a temperature drop of 20-30 degrees will take place out as weather becomes unsettled especially across the northwest (who also enjoyed spring/summertime weather over the weekend)
Ahead of the trough and cold front in the west high winds and low humidity will enhance the fire danger. Red flag warnings are up for parts of the Intermountain west and the Great Basin. Meantime, the Nation’s midsection will be quiet and much drier as rivers and streams try to recover from last weeks flooding rain. And across the eastern third of the country where below average temperatures have been hanging around – a warming trend is on the way! I think we might even get up to 80 degrees here in New York by Friday! Yipppeeee! I’m ready for it!
Meantime, I found some pictures my hubby and I took about 4 years ago at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens around this time of year…Hope you like them!

Beautiful
, as is the Goddess
Weather here in Houston is warming up as well. Just right at this time but we are bracing for the hot, sticky summer to come.
Yup! Nice and humid Luis! You’ll have to head to the beach in Galveston! haha!
Ahhh…springtime!
Those are beautiful pictures from the Botanic Gardens JD, thanks for sharing.
Here in Upstate New York they are getting ready for the annual Albany, NY Tulip Festival. Given our 300 years Dutch Heritage in the Hudson and Mohawk Valleys it’s only fitting. Here are a couple of links:
http://www.viedemoi.com/ny/index.html
http://www.albanyny.org/Government/Departments/GeneralServices/SpecialEvents/TulipFest.aspx
Each year Washington Park, in Albany, is a sea of Tulips. Then there is the traditional street scrub of State Street, beginning at the capital building, by people dressed in traditional Dutch outfits and wearing Dutch wooden shoes.
According to the locals Mother Nature is going to be very kind to us weather wise this week. The only rain in the forecast is passing showers on Saturday. This will allow the woods to dry out from the Mohawk River and south and the 3 feet of snow in the woods in the Adirondacks can slowly melt and leach into the soil. Always a better alternative that flooding for several reasons.
We have a tulip festival where I’m from too Bill…in Ottawa. I wish tulips had a smell though. Yes, we are going to have a splendid weather week here in the northeast!
Springtime!!
Beautiful time of the year when nature all arounds us comes alive and stretches forth her beauty..and SMILES!
Gorgeous weather here too….
We open on Wednesday….
Hey Dawn! Yes, it does put a spring in your step doesn’t it? Literally! Hope your opening goes well (I’m sure it will!)
What the heck is up with this crazy weather ?? We had rain for most of last week … Then it was 81 on Saturday … Then back to rain yesterday … Right now, it’s 38 degrees at 7:37am
Weather Channel Desktop has snow in the forecast for next Sunday & Monday … This is just beyond insane … We had a week last year in March where on the Monday it was 84 and by Friday (4 days later) it was snowing …
My back deck looks like Barbie’s confetti machine threw up … Pink plum blossoms everywhere … For some strange reason, my cherry tree has yet to bloom …
I saw that it’s supposed to be 80 in SLC today … That’s sooo not good for the ski resorts … Though, I just saw that Solitude ski resort shut down for the season yesterday …
As of 1:52pm yesterday, Mt Baker had a base of 185-203 inches … They say their last “scheduled” day of operation is April 27th … Though, that can change based on the weather …
I love to check out the weather cameras on Weatherbug … It’s kewl to see the snow on the roofs at Solitude as well as the white sands at Ft Myer’s beach …
I really wish it would stay cool and wet all year long here … The change between rain/snow/cold to dry/warm/sunny makes my fibromyalgia and arthritis (in my knees) flare up something fierce … Oddly enough, I feel better when it’s colder & wetter …
Hey Tiamat!
Yes, a tease of spring — and right back to where you started right? I’m sorry that you don’t feel great in the sunny weather. The heat is bad for MS too…so I can’t be out for a long time.
Good morning Janice,
my weekend was great. Sorry, yours was too short!
you take nice photos! I really like the turtles photo. They are cute
If I take nice photos, I’ll send you some again. Have a great day!
The turtles are my favorite too Fujie!
Hey Janice,
Weekends are always too short! I’m glad you were able to get some rest over the weekend. Thanks for sharing your beautiful pictures with us. It’s nice to see pretty flowers on a cold morning. We have lovely sunshine but with temperatures in the 30’s this morning I had to turn up the heat in my house and run the heater in my car. I’m glad the cold spell will be short and that things will warm up as the week progresses. Yesterday there was snow and sleet in the higher elevations west of town.
I’ll have to go through my photos and find some of my nice flower pictures to share. Unfortunately, most of my best ones are from my 35 mm camera so I’ll have to scan them.
Have a great day everyone.
Margie
Janice it was MAD HOTTTTTT Today in Israel…… tell the heat to go away
lol
Yes JD it is a shame that Tulips do not have a fragrance and how short the season is for Tulips as well. Just as much as it’s a shame that flowering fruit trees can’t stay in bloom all season.
I was in Winchester, Virginia once for their Apple blossom festival and it was quite beautiful. Boy oh boy what those people can do with apples!
I’ll bet the Ottawa Tulip Festival is a huge event huh?
Good afternoon Janice and everyone. Yep, the weekend was way too short as usual. I spent a good portion of it doing vinyl siding on my house (on the back of it). The weather was GREAT on Saturday, in the low 80’s, almost too hot because I’m not used to it now. Soon it will be really HOT and HUMID here near Raleigh as it usually is late spring and ALL summer so I better get used to it!
Great photos you guys took at the Gardens Janice.
Have wonderful afternnon ma’am!
btw, I took a quick photo while doing about 75mph on the way home earlier of some storm clouds moving through here (lol). I’ll try to send them along.
*I’ve been having a problem sending some photos lately… not sure but I think the photos might be too large (some of them)…. I guess I’ll resize and try it that way….
The photos are absolutely gorgeous, Janice. Thanks so much for sharing.
This is an interesting site … NorthWest Avalanche Center …

Looks like it got up to 61 degrees on Sat at Mt Baker ski resort … I was up there in July 2004 & it must’ve been 80 degrees …
JD –
Okay … This has me totally confuzzled … The temp increases / decreases with El Nino/La Nina
http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/analysis_monitoring/ensostuff/ensoyears.shtml
VS
The pass closure/opening dates for the 3 WA passes that get closed …
http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/winter/PassDates.htm
It looks like 1976-77 was an El Nino as they never close the three passes …
Though, what confuses me is that 2007-8 is a La Nina … But, SoCal was inundated with rain … And shouldn’t that happen only with La Nina years (ala 1991-92)??
Mmmm … doughnuts … big powdery doughnuts …

Hey Janice,
Sorry your weekend went fast, and you are right they always do..and probably always will.
No sun here today.. just rain..snow..and sleet..and lots of cold..temp is 41 right now..and there is a frost warning for the Cumberland Plateau (that’s my area)..so I will be covering some plants tonight. But Spring is suppose to arrive again later in the week.YES!!!!
So you have Spring in NY, that’s great…I know that sunshine and warmth is uplifting…after this extended winter we have had.
I love your hubby’s pics, I am in love with Tulips, and I wish they had a smell too..maybe like strawberries and chocolate..(I love strawberries dipped in choc too!!)…
talk to you 2morrow
deb in tn
Dawn…Best of Luck on your opening, and your flowers are beautiful!!
BEAUTIFUL PICTURES, TY
Janice!
The Botanical Garden in Brooklyn is truly a wonderful place!
Just learned during my last trip back home that tulips in a vase don’t need much water if you want to keep them longer…
I had no idea
Yep the weather has been really crazy lately in NY: warm on Saturday back to chilly on Sunday, it seems to change every single day!
They have a zoo in Houston? I was not aware of that.
Can’t believe I missed it!
Love Galveston though.
Do they still have the beautiful ship Elissa??
Guillaume
Hi Janice, the weekend came and went. We were told that we would fly out of here on Sunday. It’s Tuesday and we are still here. Oh well, getting paid to sit around bored.
When we return to the states, we will go to Ft. Dix, NJ. I kept my jacket handy, because you never know what it will be there. Any Idea of the extended forecast next week?
The weather has been nice the past week, but today someone turned up the heat! Today it jumped up to 97! Still a cool day for Iraq. I just hope we are out of here before the 130+ highs get here.
Take care!
SFC Thomas Bowers
I can’t believe how cold it has been. This is very unusual for NC. Tonight we will dip to around 32 degrees! By mid April we are usually in shorts and T-shirts. I have lived here since ‘92 and can’t remember another year since then that we were this cold in April. Weird weather patterns this year so far….
Love the pics JD. The turtles remind me of the day we went to Busch Gardens, Tampa. There were two large turtles who had gathered a huge crowd of spectators. I won’t mention why but I can tell ya it wasn’t fit for prime time. Ha
Is it true that if you really look hard enough you can spot foliage growing between the cracks in the sidewalks in Times Square? : )
Hey.. It’s only 54 degrees this morning. Grrrr
