Janice Dean the Weather Machine

Severe Storms hit 8 States…

Good morning!

We had some pretty significant weather move through the Central U.S. yesterday!  240 reports of severe weather including baseball sized hail,  extreme winds and tornadoes.  Today we’ll continue to see storms fire from Oklahoma up to SW Minnesota with a slightly higher risk zone from Central Kansas up into Nebraska.   Here’s a look at all of the reports from yesterday, and the incredible pictures continue to come in from Texas which has been hit hard with many storms already this year particularly in north central Texas.

Tomorrow a new storm will emerge from the Rockies and once again bring fears of more severe weather from Dallas to Chicago.

Of course the flooding is another major part of this story – areas across Oklahoma, Arkansas up into Missouri where record rains have caused major concerns for those who live close to the swollen rivers.  Flood warnings remain along the Mississippi River, while flash flood warnings are up for parts of Missouri.

Here are the latest advisories:  http://www.weather.gov/

Talk to you soon…a busy day, but I will post some more U-Report pictures soon!

Thanks Richard…yes days like this when you see such damage you just pray no one got hurt. So far, fingers crossed —- no reports of serious injuries.

Hey JD,

I never like hearing about such a widespread storm track. The property damage must be horrendous yet cars, buildings and homes can be repaired or even replaced. What I pray for is that no one was injured or worse! People are not so easily repaired and not one person can be replaced.

We are having quite a situation here in Upstate New York. We are in an EXTREME fire danger due to very, very low relative humidity with steady winds and no rain. Fire danger is based on a scale from class 1 to 5 with 5 being the worst. I just spoke with the nearest regional forest ranger and every one of his rangers is on fires as we speak. He also said we are in a Class 5 category.

Here are the NOAA conditions from the Schenectady County airport:

Wind from the NNW (340 degrees) at 14 MPH (12 KT)
Visibility 10 mile(s)
Sky conditions clear
Temperature 66 F (19 C)
Dew Point 15 F (-9 C)
Relative Humidity 14%
Pressure (altimeter) 30.19 in. Hg (1022 hPa)
ob KSCH 241447Z 34012KT 10SM CLR 19/M09 A3019

The wind is also fanning a severe multi building structure fire in Johnstown, NY 35 miles northwest of here. A tanning mill has eight of their buildings involved in this fire and the winds are pushing the flames into the neighborhood next to the mill. Here is a link for a local TV station with the story and spectacular pictures:

We are not dealing with devastating storms, but Mother Nature is giving us an equally difficult batch of problems too.

JD……

Hope you are okay, you didn’t post any replies yesterday.

I watched your analysis on the Texas tornados this morning. You appeared to be right on calling that an EF-2. Don’t know if I ever told you, but I was one of the first people to start the Tornado chasing program at the University of Oklahoma back in the early 1970s. We even had Dr. Fujita come speak to us right after he invented the F scale. I sure wish I could still find some of the pics and footage I shot chasing back in those days. The only thing we had was our guts and two way radios.

Have a great day. I got my O’Reilly shirt and I will take a pic in the next day or two and send to you. I hope you will post.

Hey Sunny!

Yeah – the day got away from me…Lots of other junk too I have to take care of outside of work. I’m back! Impressive that you were one of the first to “chase” with U of O! That’s awesome. I would’ve loved to have been in that classroom with Dr. Fujita! Can’t wait to see your picture!

Hey JD the WM…

Who originally thought up the “Janice Dean the Weather Machine” bit? I think you said it was Shep.

We need to come up with one for him…it’s a tough name to tackle…

Something like:

Word has it……..you’ll be heard….that’s the word….cuz I’m Shepherd…

I know this isn’t the answer, but I think we(all your bloggers) can come up with something.

maybe a little contest and the winner gets a coffee mug or something……

You’re right! It was Shep – the first day I met him back in early January of 2004! I love that idea of a pet name…we might want to keep it just between us though! haha!
