Janice Dean the Weather Machine

Say goodbye to June!

Hey guys – Happy Monday!  (Although it feels like Wednesday to me already since I worked this weekend! :)

The wildfires are the big story today with 1,400 fires burning across Northern and Central California.   The shear number of blazes is staggering to me.  There is a chance of thunderstorms for the region again today, but unfortunately we won’t get the moisture that we really need from the storms since a lot of it will evaporate before it hits the ground.  The possibility of dry lightning along with the dry brush will not be welcome news for firefighters and residents in the region.

The Northeast and Ohio Valley will be influenced by an upper level trough with the chance for some showers and or thunderstorms throughout the day.  A weak cold front also moving across the Eastern Seaboard will also bring the chance for some rain as the front eventually dissipates on Tuesday.

Peter and Don both mentioned Canada Day tomorrow…it’s our version of Independence Day here in the U.S.  I always had such fun on Canada day where we would all dress in red and white with our little Maple Leaf Flags and wait for fireworks downtown on Parliament Hill.  When I was a Classic Rock D.J. back home in Ottawa I always worked on Canada Day so I could meet and introduce the  great Canadian 80’s bands like Glass Tiger, Bryan Adams, April Wine, and Honeymoon Suite…(you might not recognize a lot of these names, but they were my heroes back then!  haha!)  Speaking of the 80’s…I saw on today’s Fox and Friends that they are asking viewers to send in their photos of what they looked like back then.  I think I may have to do some digging on my own.  Believe it or not, I had HUGE HUGE curly bleach blonde hair, tons ‘o makeup and every outfit had big huge shoulder pads. (I know – not too hard to believe!)…Ahhhh the good old days.  I will make a note to do some searching tonight and see if I can scan a few to post.

Anyhow, that’s it for now.   Talk to you soon!

I can imagine you with the big hair! ;-)

I had “hockey hair” in the 70s but my hairstyle has not changed in over 29 years. When you have to keep it short, you run out of options on what to do with it (haha ;-)

Do you remember “Dominion Day”? I’ll bet Pete does! As we cleaned out my Dads place after he died, we found a beautiful “pre-1967″ Canadian Flag that we fly on July 1st. Some oldtimers recognize it and others stop and ask.

Comment by Janice Dean

Yup. I do know what Dominion Day is! I’d love to see that flag too! And some guys still have the hockey hair these days. What’s that saying? Business at the front, party in the back? (something like that…)

I had to go to Sea-Tac last night to pick up my folks (who were coming back from a wild weather week in Wichita) … It was a weird drive down there … It all started with someone in their SUV in the center lane going about 5-10mph below the speed limit forcing traffic to go around on both sides (and they were running with their high beams on) …

I was coming from Snohomish County and before I got to the Ship Canal Bridge in the U-District, I was seeing the sky getting oddly illuminated and traffic slowing as well as what looked like police flashing lights … I thought it was maybe some kind of accident / explosion on the 520 or one of the lakes … By the time I got to the 520 exit, the police flashing lights were gone & traffic had opened up …

The closer I got to the airport, the more I saw of the illumination in the sky (always ahead of me & to the east behind the “hill”) … When I got to about Boeing Field, I was finally seeing the actual lightning strikes … Driving towards the storm looked like it was straight out of a post-apocalyptic movie … Very weird & eerie … The closer I got to Sea-Tac, the more frequent the lightning flashes … By the time we left the airport, the lightning was gone & left just light sprinkles …

I felt sorry for the people who were on the planes as they were being “treated” to quite the show put on by Mother Nature … The funny thing is: We DON’T get a lot of electrical storms here … And when we do, the thunder is really loud & house rattling on the hill that I live on …

Hey JD – How about keeping the 80+ temps out of the PNW ?? LOL The past 3 days with 80+ temps have been horrible here as we have no A/C … It’s 9am and already 70 degrees … My poor doggy & I can’t take the heat … The weather people here joke that summer doesn’t start in “Seattle” until July 5th …

Did I miss something here with the blogs?? Did something change ?? We can’t login via our WordPress blog names anymore …

Comment by Janice Dean

Hmmm….I didn’t know about the blog names. I’ll try to find out. Temps should cool off briefly tihs week, but then back into the warm stuff over the weekend. :(

Praise the Lord we are getting rain in West Texas at last. We have had over 1.5 inches in the last three days and that nearly doubles the amount for the year. Rain has been slow so that most of it is soaking in. Last night the toad frogs made their presence known with their croaking. I wonder how they manage to survive these dry spells. Not long from now we will have hundreds of little croakers hopping around. God’s miracles never cease to amaze me. Got to go, it is raining again and I want to sit on the poarch and enjoy it.

Good thing that some places are getting rain that need it. It needs to dry out a little in Nebraska and Iowa and other places that have been hit by flooding. Grand Island has had 10 inches of rain and that’s just for June. The total for the year is about 22 inches, more than some years and it isn’t July yet.

Comment by Janice Dean

Yes, a lot of places have hit their yearly rainfall records already! It’s astonishing.

Hey Janice! Did you ever get to meet Gordon Lightfoot? He has always been a favorite of mine!

I have always enjoyed South Parks take on Canada. Great Fun! :-)

Announcer: This hasn’t been the first trouble from Canada. Lets not forget Bryan Adams.

Canadian Ambassador: Thats not fair. The Canadian government has apoligized for Bryan Adams on several occassions.

Boy, I’m glad we can all take a little joke! ;-)

Comment by Janice Dean

Nope. Never met Gord. He’s got the most amazing voice…

Janice Dean, wow! Just flipping through the television channels, looking for weather ha! and I saw your pretty smile. It is so good to see you on national television. We spent many days together on air in Houston and you introduced me to Carmel Macchiatos. I thought you were going to marry Keith Urban! That Nicole Kidman’s got nothing on you. Without going into detail, I hope things are good for you in all aspects of your life. I am doing fine. Still happily married, living in Houston and out of the media industry. If you have any pull, could you turn down the humidity and up on the winds here? Take care and best wishes. Jeri Porto

Comment by Janice Dean

My old pal Jeri! Hey girlfriend!! I remember many good times with you! :) (and I’m still a big fan of the macchiato despite the 5 dollar price tag…) Ah yes, Keith Urban…I still have that picture of he and I. We could’ve been so good together! HAHA! I’m glad to hear things are good. I’ll get in touch soon! xo

Biofuels may not be the answer, but promotions at Red Cross blood donations sites, and your local supermarket will help ease the pain at the pump. I just saw a report on a local Fox affiliate that talks about how companys are luring consumers by offering those free gas bargains. I wonder if its worth it?

Comment by Brad

Hey Janice-

Maybe you should have joined that Riverdance troupe. It was popular back in the day. I have no idea if they are still touring.

A little to fancy in the footwork dept for me!

The 80s were a great time, for music, fashion, tv shows, and movies.

What are some of your all time favorites music of that decade?

Journey, Air Supply, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, just to name a few. I know a lot more, but i cant seem to remember it right now. I still hear a lot of these on a adult contemporary radio station in my area. What great memories.

Not to mention the mullet hairstyle, made famous by Billy Ray Cyrus and Bono from U2.

Comment by Janice Dean

Those bands are all great. And then there were the one hit wonders of the 80s as well! I think I have a whole album of One Hit Wonders somewhere!

Hey JD..

I love hearing about the good ole days..I grew up in the 60’s..and 70’s..the Hippie times..my hair was long and straight and parted down the middle..”the classic” that style is still around..

I had Big Hair in the 80’s too..and I used lots of freeze spray..and yes my wardrobe had shoulder pads too..(what were we thinking?) Oh yeah..I was heavy on the eye make-up to..HAHA..

We are having great weather here..kinda like early spring..mid 70’s.. and a bit chilly at night in the 50’s. But I don’t think it will last long before the 90’s are back..oh well..

I read the comment from Jeri Porto…Let us in on the Keith Urban thing? He is gourgeous! So what’s the scoop?

Happy Canada Day..Janice

Hey Gang,

I couldn’t resist chiming in on the 80’s topic. I hope everyone checks back in on this tread, although those who don’t probably won’t be missing much! I just wanted to say that I almost got to meet Laura Branigan after a concert in New Jersey. I went with a college friend who is blind because we were both big fans. My friend Helen could listen to a song a couple times and then play it from memory on the piano and she did a few of Laura’s songs that were just beautiful. I’ve lost touch with her since then, but she was totally amazing. Anyway, we almost talked ourselves backstage after the concert, but Laura was really tired. We did, however, write to her and got a nice personal reply. I was so shocked when she died–she died way too young.

I won’t tell you who I was a big fan of because my brothers used to tease me mercilessly and those memories have scarred me for life. (Just kidding–but I still don’t want to get teased!) I’ve met many of my favorite Christian singers over the years and Sara Renner stayed at my house when she did her concert in my church in April, so I’m pretty spoiled! Donna Summer and her husband Bruce Sudano hold a special place in my heart but that’s a long story that I won’t bore you with. I’m going to see Donna in concert on Saturday so I’m looking forward to that. I’d love to meet her and give her a big hug, but I don’t see that happening in this lifetime.

Well, I better be going…Have a great week everyone.

Margie

Hey Janice-

I think those records and albums would be a big money maker for you on Ebay if you were to sell some of it on there :)

I recently saw that VH1 One Hit wonder special hosted By William Shatner. ts a very interesting look into all the one hits over the last 30 years. The program is really long, 4 hours to be exact, but if you ever have the time to watch the whole thing, its a time well worth spending :)

You must be really lucky to get really close to a famous singer, like Laura Branigan. It must have been a memorable experience. Its reallly tragic that she isnt around anymore. She was only in her late 40s when she passed away from a blood clot in her brain. I remember reading she had signs of a headache days before she died. Who could have predicted it will take her life?

Comment by Brad

Gordon Lightfoot songs always reminded me of the late Jim Croce. I guess it was the sound of his voice.

Anyone here remember Bread, The Eagles, Nicolette Larson, REO Speedwagon, and all those groovy music from the disco era?

Comment by Margie Gacki

Hey Brad,

Laura was very sweet. I wish I did get to meet her but I still have the photo she signed for me with a very special message. I remember when I heard about Laura’s death. I think it was one of the Fox News updates during one of the evening shows and Laurie Dhue broke the news. I couldn’t believe it.

But on to happier things…I remember all those people/groups you mentioned. I liked Bread a lot. I’ve never been into rock music much so I liked the quieter music. I also like to understand the lyrics, which most of the time you can’t when the people are screaming! My favorite group, although they were around more in the 70’s was ABBA. I still enjoy listening to their music. Frida released a Swedish language CD back in 1996 that is so good. She still sounded great then and I’m sure she still does today.

Ah, memories…

Take care,
Margie

Oh yes Dominion Day, it used to actually say that on some calendars too. (even 2-3 yrs ago)

It’s a beautiful day outside finally. :)

Margie-

I dont like many current songs either, it seems like its very hard to hear those classics on the radio anymore, because most of the radio stations are changing into more of a Top 10 Hit format.

I think i heard about Laura’s passing from while i was reading the news on the internet.

Do you remember her appearence on CHiP’S, where she played Ponch’s girlfriend? I think that was the last episode before that series got cancelled.

I really like powerful songs, that actually make you think about your surroundings, plus they have a good beat where a person can sing along to. Plus a person feels free, like you can take on the world.

It seems like most of todays songs are an enigma, if you know what i mean. Most of them contain cussing, swearing, and the degrading of the female race.

If you look at some of those music videos, it contains nothing but oversexualized images and other rubbish i dont want to mention here. It seems like our traditional morals are being lost.

And i also i dont get this new thing called “Emo Music”. Listening to it supposedly makes you cut your arms and multilate yourself. Its really insane.

It was also sad what happened to that drummer from ABBA. It just happened earlier this year, he apparently blead to death in a freak accident, where he fell thru a glass door on his property.

If you also watch Entertainment Tonight, there will be a new movie with Meryl Streep called Mama Mia, and it uses a lot of classic ABBA songs.

Take Care.

I know someone here mentioned Bryan Adams. That song, “Have i told you lately, that i love you”. Very heartwarming. I remember David James Elliot sang part of that song on that show JAG.
