Hey Janice,

I hope you’re doing something fun on your day off! I only have a four day week because I was off on Monday. (Actually, I’m a little off most of the time!) I have an adventure coming up in August. I got summoned for jury duty and I’ll be on call for a month. That sounds like it should be interesting. Well, have fun tomorrow and stay cool whatever your plans are!

Margie! Jury Duty? Hang em! Hang em High!! :-) (just kidding) I have had jury duty a few times but always am refused as most defense lawyers don’t like my look and like me even less when I answer their questions. It is interesting and you get a lot of reading done.

Comment by Margie Gacki

Hey Don, I think jury duty will be fun (if that’s the right word for it). At least we don’t have many murders in Cumberland so I won’t have to worry about that. We do have a lot of drugs and domestic violence so I might get something like that if they choose me. I hope I don’t get a domestic violence case because I wouldn’t be impartial. Actually, I know someone in that kind of situation, so I would probably be excluded anyway. We shall see..

Hey Margie,

So far I have never been called for jury duty. I think it would be interesting, but with my luck I would probably get a horrific homicide.:( Is yours criminal or civil?

Hey Don, You got me thinking about those old movies from back in the day. I watched alot of the Gidget movies..and I loved the movie “Where the Boy’s are”, and I loved, loved, loved..the theme song..I believe Connie Francis sang it. :)

Janice….so you guys are surfers now??? Cool :) enjoy you off time :)

Happy Hump Day Ya”ll!!!

Margie,

I’ve had that month-long jury duty summons also. However, never had to serve. They didn’t call me to any of the trials they had.

Loved your picture on Alisyn’s blog. Tell us where you took that steam engine picture. The only steam engine I’ve ever seen is the one at Dollywood where you ride through the park. That was pretty neat.

Did you notice that Alisyn’s photos don’t have the Ureport logo?

Have a great day!

Hey Janice-

I hope you are doing something special and fun during your day off. You deserve it. Maybe catch a movie, if you have the chance.

Take Care.

Speaking of surfing, does anyone remember those classic Endless Summer flicks. Those were a true classic, for any fan of the sport.

I think there is a connection between being picked for Jury Duty, and voting in your local elections. Because it happened several friends of mine. From their experience, it isnt a good experience.

Everybody loves surfin’, surfin’ USA! Oh, sorry–I guess I got carried away with all this surfing talk!

Deb, I’m not sure what kind of cases there will be. It’s for the Allegany County Circuit Court and they handle all kinds of things. I’ll have to write about my adventures as a juror if I get called one day. I won’t be able to talk specifics but I can tell you all about my experiences. It should be very interesting.

Gwen, I’m glad you like the picture I posted on Alisyn’s blog. It doesn’t have the Ureport logo on it because she has a link that goes directly to her (or her intern since she’s off this week.) The pictures look so much better without the logo because nothing gets covered up. The photo is of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, which runs between Cumberland and Frostburg through the mountains. I wrote a little about it on Alisyn’s blog, but she doesn’t have the instant posts like this blog does. It’s hard to tell how long it will be before it gets posted. Anyway, the steam engine is called Mountain Thunder. Some trips use a diesel locomotive, but you can’t beat Mountain Thunder! They have murder mystery trains and all kinds of fun excersions, so I highly recommend it for train lovers. I might post some other pictures at some point so I’ll let you know.

Have a great afternoon, everyone.

Margie

Hey Deb, I missed your last comment as I wrote out mine above. I’m glad you liked my picture! I love photographing that train. I took one close-up picture with my camera resting on an adjacent track, looking up at the engine. (Thankfully the track wasn’t in use at the time!) There are always people there with cameras taking pictures, so it’s a popular subject.

I remember a few months back when Janice was summoned for jury duty..I don’t think she got picked..but she crossed paths with alot of interesting characters. We had alot of fun reading her daily reports.

My dad worked for GM when we lived in Illinois..he worked in the locomotive division..they built Big trains..and we got to see them every year when we went to the annual Christmas shabang there.

I LOVED “Endless Summer”. GREAT flicks for surf bums and wanna be bums. There was one made a few years back where the original surfers Sons followed their Dads route to surf the world. I just saw Janices husband surfs. West coast and Hawaiian surfers basically laugh when you talk about east coast surfing. I figure bertha might have thrown a few waves their way but nothing like what the Hawaiians get. I used to surf when I lived in California but really wasn’t that good at it.

I just figure Janice is Gidget to Seans Moondoggie! :-)

Comment by Don in Alexandria

Margie;
I keep getting called and like you, if you know someone who has been a victim of crime…(and who doesn’t?)…..you tend to keep being sent back to the pool for another trial. On my last one, the defense lawyer was known to me and I told the judge that I wouldn’t believe the lawyer even if he said rain was wet. I was honest so I figured his client will get the fair trial. I read a lot of books in the 2 weeks and even met an old classmate.

Comment by Brad

Margie-

I wonder how you got picked for Jury Duty. They must have your name somewhere in the department records. Or it could possibly from voting in the general election.

Comment by Don in Alexandria

Its taken from your voters registration and drivers license in my state. Most good people try to duck out of it as they pay nothing and treat you like cattle. Hence the saying: “Do you want your fate decided by people who weren’t smart enough to get out of jury duty?” ;-)

Comment by Don in Alexandria

An interesting note: If you are in the military and get the summons to jury duty, you WILL go. You are basically considered on temporary duty away from your command and you still draw your pay and allowances. The summons is considered a “lawfull order” which you have sworn to follow.

JD,
I hope you enjoy your day off tomorrow. You will be missed, but it is well deserved. Connie Francis did sing “Where The Boys Are” from the movie of the same title. I believe she was in it with George Hamilton and I can’t remember the others.
Hoping for a little rain here in Texas, but not holding my breath yet. Hope everyone has decent weather or a great A/C system JB

Hey gang,

The jury duty summons said that if I don’t show up the sheriff will come and get me and take me to jail! (It wasn’t worded quite like that, but that was the message.) A few weeks ago I got a form in the mail that asked some information and if there was any reason why I couldn’t serve. I returned that and it didn’t take them long to summons me!

Now this is a totally different subject–I have a poll question for you. Occasionally I will write about what the dopey people in Cumberland do as far as driving is concerned. I want to find out if people in other places are just as dumb as they are here so I have a question. Do people where you live park in the middle of the travel lane while there waiting to pick someone up or drop someone off or even run inside the store/house? They do it here all the time and it drives me crazy, especially if there’s plenty of room to safely pull over to the curb on the other side of the street. Someone did that not too far from my house on my way home this evening and I’m glad I got by before the truck carrying porta-potties came from the opposite direction. That could have been ugly!

Ah, it’s just one of those days…Have a great evening, everyone.

Margie

Comment by Don in Alexandria

Yep Margie! It happens here too. The logic apparently being: I pay taxes on the whole road so I’m going to use it! ;-)

Ya gotta beware those travelin porta potties!! Whhheeeeewwwwwwwwww ;-(

Hey Margie-

I guess its would be wise to just show up and serve your time. Because i wouldnt want something bad to happen to you, like you get arrested and being sentenced to heard jailtime. You definately dont derserve it at all. You arent a criminal!

I seen that all the time where i live, epsecially in the downtown area. They should just have the common courtesy to park in the freight loading zone. That will also spare others, and save them from paying a hefty fine for a parking ticket.

Hey everyone-

Did you hear about Brit Hume leaving as the host of the 6pm time slot? I wonder who is going to fill in for him? He is a legend in the news buisiness, and i hope FNC chooses someone well qualified.

Possibly Adam Housley, and Erica Hill from that other liberal network? FNC should negotiate for her, she would be a wonderful addition to the staff.

Plus i heard there also going to be other major changes to the FNC lineup.

Any thoughts on all this?

===============================================================================

A friend got to serve her jury duty for a trial that involved the person she voted for. Not being too politically inclined, it was the first time she ever voted, thus also the first time she was chosen for jury duty. The person was a councilman that was suing a previous partner from his law firm about something trivial. None the less, although she voted for him as councilman, she judged against him in his lawsuit.

It most likely someone who has great knowledge of politics and contacts in Washington DC….So that is why I think the two you mentioned would not be best suited…

FNC would want someone is well versed and seasoned in the landscape of the beltway…

I believe “Hawaiian Eye” was about private detectives based in Hawaii. My memory is fairly fuzzy on it, but I know Connie Stevens was a regular on the show. Also, I believe, was an actor named Anthony Eisley(possibly also a young Robert Conrad). Does anyone else remember(or is old enough to)?

I wonder if Janice is down here at Tony Snows funeral today? I didn’t realize how close to him I lived as Monday night there was a gathering at his home in Alexandria and the President came over and payed a call on the family. The one thing I have always admired about President Bush is his basic humanity and his core beliefs. Love him or hate him, he stands by what he believes. :-)

Comment by Don in Alexandria

Hey Deb!! Is that a snake over there? (haha). Remember they are more scared of you than you are of them. Sometimes it is hard to remember as they slither by..

Comment by Gwen in Mississippi

Ok. If this shows up twice, it because of pilot error. Apparently, something I hit was the wrong key.

Hello, everyone!
1. Jury summons in Lauderale County, MS (and in MS in general) come from voter registration rolls. I have been summoned several times, but never served. My brother is life-time law enforcement, and I guess they think I would be biased. However, they are deadly serious about summons here. If you aren’t present at the appointed time of your summons, a warrant will be issued for you and a sheriff’s deputy dispatched to pick you up.
2. No, Margie. MD doesn’t have the market cornered on dumb drivers. There are plenty of them here in MS. My daily commute to work is about 25 miles one way. So, I’m on the road alot. There are days that I have to say, “Lord, please help me with this road rage”. So far, He’s done just that. My oldest son used to say that he wished he had a 10-minute gun, so that he could shoot stupid drivers. They’d be out–but only for 10 minutes. Of course, that’s an exaggeration–but shows you how frustrating dumb driver can be.
3. As far as replacing Britt Hume, they’ll probably go with Brett Beir (that’s probabaly misspelled). I, too, like the Glenn Beck idea. We watch him almost every night. (Husband can’t stand Alan Colmes.)

Hope y’all are having a great day!
Gwen

Comment by Gwen in Mississippi

Oh, one more thing:
Deb, We have lots of snakes here in MS, too–probably since we live in a very rural area. We used to not kill chicken snakes (aka gray rat snakes), but we’ve had a couple of instances of them getting in our house. (Small children tend to leave doors open–not a good thing in the country.) So, now we do kill them. I also had an incident one afternoon when I drove my car into the garage and got out, I heard what I thought was a hissing at the back of the vehicle. I started toward the sound, and then realized that it was a rattle snake, coiled up just outside the garage. I called my oldest son, who brought his shotgun and killed the thing. Needless to say, I was extremely terrified. I hate snakes!

What do you guys about the low carb diet? It seems like its most efficient and healthiest way to lose weight during these grueling times on our society?

—————–

Also what are your thoughts on the fact that all of the liberal smear machine newtork is going to follow their star candidate, BHO, on a trip to Iraq? Can you say preferential treatment to their star candidate? Its just like how Steve explained it this morning, those other liberal network are just like a infomerical for BHO. Its sickening when you think about it.

Comment by Margie Gacki

Gwen,

I pray a lot when I’m in my car! I do it regularly before longer trips. It’s amazing what people will do in a car. I had a good laugh on my way to lunch this morning. I went out to lunch with a friend and as I headed down the hill to the parking lot, some guy stopped to pick up someone from one of the houses on the block. Now, I know the street doesn’t get much traffic, but it is narrow and if cars are parked on both sides, there’s only room for one car at a time. This guy stopped in the middle of the street and got out to get the person. Now, I might have been a little more understanding if the street was full of cars, which it often is when hospital employees park there, but there was a nice big open spot right in front of the house he went to! If he would have pulled up 15 feet he could have parked out of the travel lane! I know there are more important things in life, but this is just a pet peeve of mine. I know that God gave everyone a brain–the world would be a much safer and better place if people used them! I did have a very nice lunch, though, so that made me forget about the dopey driver for a while.

I guess having a snake in or near your garage is a more serious issue than people parking in the middle of the street. I’m not really fond of snakes, but thankfully I haven’t seen any for a while. We did have a bear hanging around the emergency room entrance at Braddock Hospital a couple years ago. I’m sure that was an interesting sight!

Have a great afternoon everyone.

Margie

Who do you think would be a good candidate to fill Brit Hume spot? I wonder if Greta would be well suited for the job. I know she posted something in her blog asking if she should “throw in her shoes” and take the job?

I was going to suggest Bret Baier, but i wonder if he would be even interested?

A lot of people saying all these changes arent in the best interest of the viewers, and are saying these will just make the ratings go down even more for FNC.

I dont agree with that at all, FNC steadily has been number one in the cable news ratings for almost 10 years, and contrary to reports, its still comfortably ahead of those 2 other liberal networks.

Comment by Brad

Don-

I think Janice probably did attend Tony Snow’s funeral along with a number of her FNC colleagues.

I know Bill OReilly will be taping his show from there also.

I agree with you wholeheatedly about President Bush. That is exactly why i am kind of sad to see him leave office. He is great fearless and steadfast leader, who isnt swayed by popularity numbers, and what people think of him. Those are the traits i admire about him. And have you noticed we havent been attacked since 9/11? Contrary to what those liberals will say, its basically because of President Bush, taking the fight to Iraq and overseas. Sure, it didnt go as we planned, and their are a lot of casualities, but who said it was easy? Those men and women in uniform are giving their lives for out country, and we should never forget it.

Comment by Don in Alexandria

Greta would be horrible. Who’d take her seriously around here? Brett Baier would be a good fit. I love when the number 2 and 3 networks for cable news say they’ve increased audience by 50%. So that means they went from squat to squat and a half! :-)

That is another good suggestion. I have always enjoyed Glenn Beck, epsecially his radio show, its witty yet entertaining. A lot of times i would be channel surfing, and find myself watching his evening show. Its basically the only program i would watch on that liberal network.

Maybe you can use you insider influences to recommend that to the FNC higher ups? They might just go with your suggestion.

Hey Deb-

I havent seen a snake before up close, but if i did, i am sure i would be just and scared and frightened as you were.

You will get over your fears, i have confidence in you. If you ever need any advice, let me know :)

Make next time, if you happen to be nearby your storeroom at your house, you should pick up a shovel or something big, like a hammer, and pound it into the ground. Then maybe you will have a great dinner recipe. I heard snakes tastes just like chicken :)

Take Care.

Comment by Brad

Hey Margie-

I think praying is good for your overall health, and it keeps you optimistic about life in general. Its also a great confidence booster. Take Care.

FNC will probably shuffle its entire lineup anyway, and Greta is stationed out of Washington, so it will make perfect sense if she moves into Brit Humes spot. The only thing i dont like is all the nasty comments and messages she let into her GretaWire blog. I wish she would moderate it more carefully.

Brad,
Did that show have Ed “Kookie” Byrnes on it? (Remember the Connie song: Kookie, Kookie….Lend me your comb”? I have it on my I-pod:-)

I wondered about Janice being here as I was down near the Fox Bureau this morning leaving a meeting and noticed a lot of people coming out of the building and a most were wearing somber looking attire.

They say you can tell a lot about a person by 2 things: The quality of their enemies and the numbers that attend their funeral.

Thanks for the story about your friend who had to serve jury duty. I guess it was ironic in a way. Plus it verifies how they choose people for the job. But i wont let it stop me from voting this year. I really want McCain to win. Our country will be in great danger if he is not.

And thanks for the Jeff Masters blog, it looks like he is the official person when it comes to weather. His analysis and predictions are so precise and right on the money.

You be careful..those rattlers are deadly..I have never seen one…but I have seen many cooperheads.:(

Hey Don…
The next time I see one slithering away…and I am in cardiac arrest…I’ll remember they are just as afraid of me..LOL..:)

Hey Brad..
If I need some snake therapy..you will be the first too know..I promise:)..thanks

Hey Margie..
Am I gonna have to come to Cumberland and get redneck and teach those crazy drivers, the rules of the road?? Say the word..and I will bring my snake..that’ll show em.;)

It has been blazing hot here today..I am looking foward to dark..when it cools off about 20 degrees…

Have a nice evening everybody :)

Hey Deb,

Come on up to Cumberland with those snakes! That might be a good deterrent: besides getting points on their license for violations, they’ll have to wrangle a rattler!

I hope your weather cools down a little this evening. We got up to about 95 today and it’s still 88. It is supposed to get down to the low 60’s overnight so that will be nice if that actually happens.

Hey Dawn,

How are ya? I hope you’re having a good week and that the weather is being nice to you. How are things on the farm doing? I hope you don’t any snakes lurking around!

Brad…My idea of people well suited for Special Report would be the someone like a Brian Wilson or Chris Wallace….Brett Baier seems a bit too young yet but definately on that kind of course….(looking at those kinds of name makes me a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to news doesnt it? )

And Brit Hume isnt only the anchor for SP…He is also DC Managing Editor …(Wilson is DC bureau chief)….

Filling Brit’s shoes means someone who really is seasoned when it comes to DC….At least I think so….

This is a tired wench…

Brad, My husband is the polar opposite of Alan Colmes. He’s ultra conservative, retired military–a total straight arrow. Alan makes his blood pressure rise alarmingly, so we don’t watch much H&C.

Deb, We have copperheads, cotton mouths, and rattle snakes. Usually those types of snakes stay in the wooded areas, but on rare occasions we’ll see them close to the house. We also have armadillos and coyotes. There have even been rare sitings of black bears, but they’re those are rare indeed. My husband killed a rattle snake in Kemper County (just north of us) that had 14 rattles and a button. He skinned the snake, tanned the skin and made an absolutely beautiful belt from it. He promised he’d make me one like it, but somehow he’s never gotten around to it.

Margie, I also pray sometimes when driving or at other times that others might think is odd. Sometimes they’re really not so much prayers as they are conversations with God. Just telling Him what is on my heart–sometimes a need–sometimes a thanksgiving! Quite seriously, praying does help with road rage or any other time when you just need to take a deep breath and think before you act.

Check back with y’all tomorrow.

Hi all, checking in. Been a busy man lately. Nice weather the last few days, rained tonight however. Ontario is expected to get hit with a heat wave for the first time this summer. About time!

Comment by Margie Gacki

Gwen,

I think sometimes we get so busy that it’s easy to take blessings for granted, so I try to remember to thank God for the little things as well as the big things. For example, yesterday after work I had to go to Wal-Mart, which I hate because it’s always so busy. It was one of those trips where everything clicked–I had all green lights and when I found a great parking place not too far from the entrance, I just said, “Thank you, Lord.” I was tired so I appreciated not having to walk far out in the heat. When I pray before I head to my parents’ place, I pray that I will stay calm and not do anything stupid. I don’t drive recklessly, but I can get mad when other drivers do something stupid (and there’s no shortage of stupidity on the roads!) Over the weekend I drove my parents up to my brother’s place for a birthday party and a car zoomed by that must have been doing at least 100 mph. It scared the daylights out of me! You really have to stay alert!

Now it’s time for bed. I hope everyone has a great Friday.

Margie

Hey Deb-

I think Brit Hume will still have his duties as DC manging editor, but maybe he is looking to work more behind the scenes. I read that he is still in contract negotiations, so we wont know what is going to happen just yet. He is expected to remain with FNC in some way, most likely as a political analyst and as a panelist on “Fox News Sunday,” possibly even filling in for Chris Wallace.

I do agree that his successor needs to have some knowledge about the news around the DC area, Bret Baier maybe a little young, he is in his late 30s, according to a report, but he always fills in on Fridays, so it would only be natural that he follow in Brits shoes.

But the possibility of Brit Hume leaving, raises questions about the possible exits of other FNC journalists after the presidential election in November, including Bill OReilly. I read about all this in some article.

What do you think about this?

Comment by Brad

Gwen-

I think that Alan Colmes is a moderate liberal, and he probably agrees with a lot of what Hannity and the other FNC journalists are saying, or he wouldnt stay at the network for as long as he did.

Even though, its fun to see the arguements and fighting that goes on during the discussion. Its what makes the show enjoyable.

I dont think your husband should get worked up about a simple program, the point is not to take it seriously. Next time he gets angry and irritated at something, tell him to think positive thoughts. That always calms my nerves.

Your husband is a American hero, and served his country with great bravery and dignity .He should be comended for his service and duty.

I am not really into the ipod. I would rather stay with my portable radio and walkman. Its a lot simpler and easier to manage.

But i do know that if you have an ipod nano, and happen to see a red and green flashing lights, that means it is malfunctioning, and you can turn it in for either a replacement, or a cash refund.

One thing I’ve learned from researching medical information that is appropriate for all things is to verify your sources. Anybody can write whatever they want but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s true. The Internet makes it very easy for anyone to post anything, so it’s always a good idea to check out the facts when you read something. It kind of reminds me of all those people who predicted that the world would end in a certain year. Well–if you’re reading this, it’s obvious the world hasn’t come to an end! The news and entertainment industries are full of gossip so keep that in mind.

I hope everyone has a great Friday!

I’m not saying a word about that article! I do have a link to some real medical research that some folks might be interested in reading. I came across an article about a study of an experimental drug in pill form for multiple sclerosis. Here’s the link if anyone is interested:

This is from the National Library of Medicine/National Institutes of Health. This kind of study is much more worthwhile!

Hey Sal-

I dont know, i guess FNC wants to revamp its lineup. possibly because viewership is down, or maybe they want to gear their shows to a younger audience. That is what i read in some article.

If you want to keep up with the latest happenings in cable news.

Go to

Its gives you a good behind the scenes look into what is happening inside the world of cable news, and not just for FNC, they also talk about those liberal smear machine networks, which i absolutely hate.

That article was pretty interesting, and i first thought it was hilarious. But i guess you can never believe totally all the medical research that is being done, because anyone can just make up info, with the internet these days, you kind of have to use your judgement when making choices with your health.

Thanks for whoever posted that article about that experimental MS drug.

I have a feeling Janice is going be really interested in hearing about this :)

It sounds like a cure is on the way.

Dawn-

Whatever happened to the shows and programming on FNC, i hope people will respond to and enjoy it, because i dont want the ratings fall dramatically.

FNC has to continue to be the number one trusted source in news, and the blow the rest in the dust.
