Landfall

Hey guys. I’m pooped (can I say that on the blog?) haha.

I’m heading home, but thought you might like to have a peak at the landfall advisory…

Have a great night – I hope everyone is safe and sound. I know many of you mentioned you have loved ones in and around the south Texas area, so our thoughts and prayers are with your families…I don’t care what the “catagory” of a storm, it’s still scary when you hear the wind howling and the pounding rain against your windows. The storm is still going to cause some major problems – including flooding. Some regions have already received over 10 inches of rain! The tornado watch is still posted just west of Galveston until 7pm Central time.

Thanks to everyone who sent in U-report pics, and to everyone that contributed over the last few days. You guys make this blog a pleasure to update!

…Dolly made landfall in South Padre Island…expected to move
farther inland over southern Texas later today…

a Hurricane Warning remains in effect for the coast of Texas from
Brownsville to Corpus Christi…and for the northeastern coast of
Mexico from Rio San Fernando northward to the border between Mexico
and the United States.

At 200 PM CDT…1900z…the eye of Hurricane Dolly was located
near latitude 26.4 north…longitude 97.3 west. This position is
over Laguna Madre about 35 miles…60 km… north-northeast of
Brownsville Texas and 30 miles…51 km…east southeast of
Raymondville.

Dolly is now moving toward the west-northwest near 7 mph…11 km/hr.
On the forecast track…the eye of Hurricane Dolly will be moving
inland over far south Texas later today. Persons are advised not to
venture outdoors during the relative calm of the eye because winds
will soon increase quite rapidly.

Because a portion of the circulation of Dolly has been interacting
with land…the maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 95
mph… 150 km/hr…with higher gusts. Dolly is now a category one
hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Stronger winds…especially
in gusts…are likely on high rise buildings. A gradual weakening
should begin soon as the eye moves farther inland.

Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 25 miles…35 km…from
the center…and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 140
miles…220 km. Harlingen Texas measured 54 mph…87 km/hr sustained
winds with gusts to 74 mph…119 km/hr.

Minimum central pressure reported by an Air Force reconnaissance
plane at landfall was 967 mb…28.56 inches.

Dolly is expected to produce total rainfall accumulations of 8 to 12
inches…with isolated amounts of 20 inches…over portions of
south Texas and northeastern Mexico over the next few days.
Brownsville National Weather Service Doppler radar has estimated up
to a foot of rain so far over portions of coastal far south Texas.
These rains will likely cause widespread flooding across portions
of south Texas and northeast Mexico.

Coastal storm surge flooding of 6 to 8 feet above normal tide
levels…along with large and dangerous battering waves…can be
expected near and to the north of where the center makes landfall.

Isolated tornadoes are possible over portions of south Texas today
and tonight.

Janice…To hopefully make it a bit easier so you dont have to go digging too deep backwards with all the pics I resent it…

I also sent 3 pics of the farm stand with veggies EVERYWHERE…Things dont look quite like that yet…but close…2 or 3 more weeks and that is what it will look like…

Hope you get some decent rest….

(I kinda hope it POURS tomorrow…So I can have the day off…been a few weeks since I had a full day off….)

Trying to catch up on the news of the day but I am kinda tired and its hard to focus….

Warm thoughts to all….and to those who had loved ones in Dolly’s path I hope you have heard from them and that your hearts are more settled….Being unsettled over a loved one is not pleasant….

Hey Don,
It’s nice to be called “shipmate” again! Enlisted. SK2 for four yrs, most out of Guam & the gulf. You?

Hi Faith!

PH but worked a lot as an IS. 29 years active and reserve. (started in 1979) Ow! Now I do feel old!

You lucky duck! I always wanted to go to Guam but never got orders that way! Worked in F-14s, Carriers, LST’s, and one Destroyer. I was in the Gulf when the Ayatollah was still around. Are you still in the reserves or are you “free” ;-)

Great Job Janice!

I watched and listened to you a few days ago when you were sounding the alarms early. Let me say you hit it dead on! Neil Frank and Bob Sheets should be proud of you. As a self professed hurricane nerd who is not easily impressed, I am this time. I live in the Tampa Bay area, and I think if we don’t get one in the next 3 weeks, then I’d put my money on a big one hitting the GA/SC area in August. But, on the other hand, it should be a busy late September/October for the Florida Gulf coast.

In the meantime, the folks in South Texas have you to thank today. That is if they listened to you!

Kudos!
Greg

Hey everyone-

Did you happen to see the FNC news updates? It confirmed what we already knew about cell phones, and long term usage can cause brain cancer later in life. I am glad i dont own one of those, i would rather stick with the cordless phones around my house.

Good Morning Janice,
you do a great job,
and you should of seen the storm in Ohio last night,
the rain was coming down.

Janice!!!
I forgot to mention how your coverage on Dolly these past days has been really excellent! Thank you for all your hard work in keeping us informed!

I didn’t see the FNC updates Brad but there has been some research in France tending to prove the risks of cellular phone use, especially on children’s brain. They recommend to use the ear plug extension….
And it’s supposedly even worse when you are in the countryside, far from cities because the signal to reach the phone is more powerful :(

Brad and Guillaume….

I dont remember who made the comment but I remember someone saying that with text messaging becoming so popular that cell phones as they are may become obsolete??

Looking at the young people I work with I would say that just well may be the case…they text alot on their phones…but dont really use them as phones…..

Comment by Sami

Janice, No matter what the weather, you always cheer me up with your delightful personality. It’s great watching you anytime but especially when you do your little dance….Judy

Hey Guillaume and Dawn-

I dont think i posted that comment, but i do remember hearing something like that a while back. But they said that writing letters the old fashioned way would become obsolete, because of the popularity of emails and text messaging.

What i mentioned about cell phone was a article here on the FNC website about a study, which is telling people not to wait until cell phone and cancer links are confirmed.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,389881,00.html

They recommend cutting back on usage before its too late.

i dont see what the fad over cell phone is. Especially iphone. too much technology isnt really good for our society. i read it creates more road rage incidents on our highways.

I know what you mean, the young people these days, have a cell phone simply because its the cool thing to do, probably to fit in with their friends and be popular. Its just like all those social networking sites, those are killer, and most kids and teenagers dont understand the risks and dangers posed by those sites.

Take Care.

Comment by Wenchie

Brad…

I hear what you are saying…but …

Alack alas….I admit to suffereing from “I-want-an-iPhone”-itis!! :o

Hopefully if I wait long enough…it too will pass … ;)

I just hate feeling kinda disconnected from the news and the internet when I am at work…esp when things are slow with few customers…easy to get bored … :(

Hey everyone-

Dawn-

I think the internet can be used for good or bad purposes. Its great for communicating with people from all over the world you probably never meet in real life, and its a awesome resource for finding and researching infomation.

But there are a ton of bad things, including weirdos that have nothing better to do than to hide behid a computer screen and say all kinds of nasty and disgusting remarks. You see a lot of those stuff on those deadly social networking sites, that is exactly why i stay away from those stuff. It has made our society much more dangerous, because people on those sites think they can post pics of themselves and other personal indentifiable info that can be read by everyone. Dont they know that whatever is been posted on the internet is there forever?

I could still recommend you get the iphone if you really want to. Who knows? It will make a good collectors item one day. But just use it in moderation.

Take Care.
