Finding out…
Since I spilled the beans today about my little growing baby in my belly, I thought I would share an entry in my diary when I found out the news…complete with picture proof!
Saturday May 24th, 2008
Today was the day (yelling this at the top of my lungs) I found out I was pregnant! I can’t tell you what kind of emotional roller coaster ride I’ve been on for the last 6 hours.
I’ve been tired and kind of “under the weather” for the last few weeks… Falling asleep much earlier than usual at night and sleeping for 8-9 hours…little hot flashes during the day and feeling flushed…a little dizzier than usual, out of breath…The week before this past one I was craving fruit salad at night for several nights which is totally weird for me. Hey I’m not complaining though – at least it wasn’t s’mores or fried chicken!
This morning (Saturday) I woke up at 5am and decided I was going to take a pregnancy test since things were a little “off schedule” if you get my drift…I still didn’t think anything was out of the ordinary, but you know.…just incase…
Once I got it in my head that being pregnant could be a possibility, I could not stop my brain from going crazy…like what if I’m pregnant.? What is it going to be like being pregnant…what kind of mother will I be…how much weight will I gain!! (eek!) How will I tell my husband???” Will he be happy? Shocked? Fall back asleep? I made myself a coffee (we’re allowed 1-2 cups a day according to the internet…just in case I really am pregnant)…and took a vitamin (with the recommended dose of folic acid…just in case…) and then put on my sneakers (still in my pajamas with a coat on-top – I love New York) and set out to the 24 hour Duane Reade to pick up my pregnancy kit (besides – we needed soap and toilet paper anyway..might as well pick up the old pregnancy test while I’m there- right?)
A flood of ideas were still streaming through my mind as I get to the Duane Reade. What if I’m not pregnant? Will it make me sad? Will I be relieved? When do I tell my girlfriends? What will I do without Chardonnay? It took me 10 minutes to find the actual Pregnancy Test aisle once I got to Duane Reade (It was abou 5:35 am by this time) Once I got there though, I was in EPT hell. There were about 15 brands to choose from….I decided I was going to go for the easiest one to find out the result….the 25 dollar “digital” test that had an extra one included “just to make sure!” And I threw in a gigantic bag of M and M’s as well just for kicks…M and M’s and an EPT test….hmmm…what did I need a pregnancy test for??
I got to the cash register and said “GOOD MORNING!” a little too loudly for the clerk. I had a feeling he’s seen this kind of thing before – with a bubble cloud over his head like the comic books thinking something like: ”Oh yeah – another one of THESE ladies…the “I need to find out right away” 5:30 in the morning types that throw in other little drugstore items (gigantic bag of M and M’s) to try and pretend that’s not the main reason they are at the drugstore.”
Once I forked over the cash, I cruised on home trying to do the math in my head “just incase” on when this possible baby might be born…Hmmm….Sometime in January maybe? But shhhh! Don’t think about something that you don’t know for sure…
I get home – tear my jacket off and try to read the directions of the pregnancy test…ok easy enough – pee on a stick. And wait…wait…wait…(thinking about how I forgot to get toilet paper and soap at the store…what the heck is taking so long for this test to work? Is it broken? Did I “miss the stick” with my “aim”?
3 minutes waiting for a “you’re pregnant” message on a stick is a mighty long time!!
Finally….
PREGNANT
I can’t believe it. Is this for real? What the????? How did this happen? Oh yeah – 5th grade health class…!
I decide I can’t wait to tell my husband. I must go wake him…
I rush in…he senses I’m looking at him overhead and opens his eyes
He asks if I’m coming back to bed. It’s too early to be up. I crawl inside and tell him I have news.
He’s wide awake in a split second.
“I’m pregnant”….heartbeat…heartbeat…
“oh my….wow….oh…”
It was good though. I could tell he was happy. (a little shocked and maybe feeling like he was still in a dream sequence)
And that’s how the story went.
We got up – kept looking at one another…I kept asking him how he felt…and how crazy this is….
He made me pancakes (my favorite – and this was definitely a special pancake occasion)…we kept looking at each other trying to figure out what the other one was thinking… and said we couldn’t believe it could happen this fast…I think I’m still in shock. Its now 1 pm, and after going for a long walk and a quick trip into Barnes and Noble to buy 3 “what to expect when you’re expecting” type books to read, I’m writing this out now. I want to remember this day. I want to remember what it was like to see the “pregnant” stick and the look on my husbands face…and to venture for the very first time into the “expecting mothers” aisle at Barnes and Noble.
I’m shocked, happy, scared, insecure, blessed, and wondering how the next 9 months are going to go…and how on earth I will take care of a small little person? I guess we’re about to find out! Oh yeah – and we took a picture of that little pregnancy pee on a stick test! Just to show you proof:
(Yeah, I decided to get my moneys worth and pee on all three! YIPPPEEEE)

Janice…That was just tooooo delightful for words of a story…

Thanks for sharing such a personal story with us. You had me laughing and crying at the same time! I am so happy for you and Sean. I know you’ve had days where you haven’t felt well, but I pray that you will otherwise have a trouble free pregnancy and bring a precious and healthy little baby boy into this world. God bless you.

Beautiful writing there Janice. I can tell you from the guys side we run the whole gauntlet of emotions in 5 seconds after you women tell us. The main questions being “Are we ready?” and “Will I be a good Dad?”
You do get some “carte blanche” privilages concerning moods and cravings for the next few months so enjoy and then you will have a little one which will show you both a level of responsibility you can only imagine now. Sean will have a son to “sic on the girls” when he gets older and you will have two “little boys” to take care of.
All my best to you two…….let the adventure continue………;-)

That is a great story.
Indulge me for a minute while I tell ours. We had been trying for over 2yrs without success. We had been to fertility docs and everything. We did everything to try to up my count and doing it at the right time. My wife was getting really annoyed with the disappointment every month at not being pregnant. So like you she felt a little weird one night and her monthly timing was off. I had a feeling before she did. So she went and peed on the stick. Tick…tick…tick. So we go back in and see that there are 2 lines. One really bold and the other really faint. I said…you are pregnant. She didn’t believe it. The line was so faint. I asked her why she didn’t get the one that said ‘pregnant’ instead of stupid lines. So we read the directions and they say any second line means you are pregnant. She still didn’t believe it. So she calls her mom. Her mom finally convinces her. It was the most exhilarating few mins in my life up until the birth. We called my parents and sister right away.
Janice, I can’t not tell you how happy I am for you. You will be a great mom, don’t you worry.
Just be ready for everyone telling how much your life is going to change and all the advice and suggestions…uh…it gets old really quick. So I will try to limit mine.
I still feel like I am the only one in the world to have a newborn. I feels great!!!
Take care Janice,
Thanks for posting Allie’s picture. Allie is a regular superstar.
Dear Janice, I’ve never e-mailed anyone on Fox before, though I watch every day at some point. I saw you make your announcement – I kinda thought you might be. I have five kids, love ‘em to death. Motherhood is the most wonderful (and most awful sometimes) thing in the world. I’m very happy for you. God bless you and your husband and the baby. Pam
Janice congratulations my dear. Good gracious what a bit of good news there. One thing for certain beng born in January he’ll know how to adapt to the cold quickly. Congratulations again hope nothing but the best for you and your famly
Janice,
Congradulations ! You’re such a character & always a joy to watch and read.
I have MS, as I’ve learned that you do as well. I’ve learned that WOMEN who are PREGNANT, that already have MS, do well during the pregnancy , however…..AFTER the pregnancy they are at an increased risk to have a NEW MS attack. For some women, it’s the pregnancy that “triggers” the first MS attack and subsequent diagnosis.
I hope that you will inform your NEUROLOGIST (hopefully a MS Specialist) that you are pregnant and discuss what, if anything, can be done to minimize or avoid a new attack. I would be curious “IF” you were to have an attack, can you have the normal Solu-Medrol (steroid) treatment while you are nursing? IF not, any new attack, without treatment, could stick for good.
Again, congradulations to you and you family !!! I know you’ll be an incredible Mom !
Thomas
Congratulation Janice!
We love watching you on Fox & feel like we are all a family!
After losing Tony & worrying about Neil’s absense, it is wonderful to hear such good news!
We will keep you in our prayers. Can’t wait to see pictures of this little guy.
Stay well & get rest
Yep Janice, you will be a great Mom, that’s for sure!!!
And Sean will be a perfect Dad (I can already picture the Baby Weather Machine on a surf board while listening to Mom’s weather advices and Dad’s great skills!!)
Dawn, is your uncle OK?
Guillaume
Janice-
Thanks for sharing this great story with all of us. You are going to be a great mom, maybe even win the “Parent of the Year Award” someday!
Sean and you must be very happy!
Have a great morning.

Good morning Janice,
Congratulations! You are going to make a great mom. I can’t imagine that your hubby won’t be smiling huge over the news…and we will enjoy your journey too
as we watch this event unfold.
Good Bless you!
I wanted to let you know my husband was diagnosed with MS and he decided to use Copaxon and the Swank diet. When he had his next mri a year later it was gone and he was a light bulb and said he would be in a wheel chair in three years. He followed the diet completely. When we ask our DR he said he stopped telling people about the diet because he never knew anyone who actually followed but he agreed that it did stop and cure MS.
Congratulation to you and your hubby! Hope it’s girl.
Thanks for all you do,
Linda

I am so happy for you! Children are a gift from God! I have 3 girls and they grew up so fast. You will be a great Mom! Good luck and Congratulations to you and your husband!!!
Only five months of freedom left and then your world will be turned upside down…..
Just kidding, nothing like becoming a parent, but it does change everything about your life from that moment on.
(Guillaume….He is in ICU….we are still waiting on blood culture results to know exactly what kind of infection we are dealing with…….)
Janice,
Thanks for sharing your beautiful story. Outside of my own pregnancies and those of my sons and their wives, I don’t think I’ve ever had one that made me happier. I wanted to just get up and dance with you when I read the news.
Yes, it does change everything—but for the better. Just go with your instincts on this one. I believe that you will be a great mom naturally, without too much advice from all the experts. Like I said yesterday, enjoy every little moment. They are too precious for words.
Love ya,
Gwen
What an awesome story….you and Sean are the BEST!! Congrats! Dawn and the gang!

Janice,
You are so cute and I am thrilled to hear that you are pregnant. Funny thing is I found out the Saturday before you at 5:00 am that I was pregnant. The best of luck to you. My family are all happy for you and will be watching your progress.

Hi, Janice and everyone!
Janice, this is indeed wonderful news! It crossed my mind on Tuesday that maybe you are pregnant. Now, there are no “maybe’s” about it.

Shoot for January 5th, Janice! That was my mother’s birthday!

Congratulations, Janice! — I am so excited for you and your hunky, fireman husband, Sean! –
Congratulations from a long time fan, all the way back to Imus. To you and John all the best and God bless.
CONGRATULATIONS! You are in for the ride of your life! Hang on and enjoy it – especially the “little years”; they go by SO fast!
CONGRATS!!! I had a February daughter and I can tell you that having a BUN IN THE OVEN thru the WINTER is the best insulation ever!! While everyone around me was bundled up and shivering I was in a longsleeve shirt and sweater just cruising right along!!! By the time I felt like getting me and baby out and about, spring had sprung and she and I watched the blooms, daffodils and leaves unfold together…. GLORIOUS. Enjoy each moment; I can’t wait until you write that you can feel him doing flip flops in your tummy!! Baby flutters are SOOOOO cool. Its like riding fast down a roller coaster and “losing your stomach” without standing in line (or even moving!!)
Free advice: Think about grandma-made afghans to wrap your little one up on those cold January and February nights; they are warm and soft with crocheted ‘holes’ not found in ordinary blankets (to ease your mind from worrying about baby suffocating in his sleep…. it is hard enough to sleep once your little one is born, knowing if he buries his face in an afghan – he can still breathe – is one way to make a night pass a little quicker and get a little much needed rest..).
God bless you and your growing family!

Congratulations to you and your husband, Janice. What fantastic news! I wish you a happy, healthy baby. The three of you are going to have so much fun!
Congrats on your pregnancy! I remember the feeling of excitement/panic/relief upon getting positive results! I just know your pregnancy will go well and you and your husband will soon have a lovely family! You were so cute when you broke the news! What a great on-air personality you are!
My friend, Cynthia, with whom I went to St. Leonard’s Grammar School (Class of 1954) and J. Sterling Morton High School (Class of 1958) back in Berwyn and Cicero, Illinois passed along this story I think you and your blog readers will enjoy, Janice. I’m also uploading an illustration via uReport to go with it.

Took me back to when I found out, and tears began to flow. For me it was four times, and thank God each one was just as exciting. God Bless and Best wishes
HI JANICE,
READING YOUR “JOURNAL” BROUGHT TEARS TO MY EYES. THAT DOESN’T HAPPEN EASILY, BUT I CAN RELATE TO YOUR JOY AND YOU EXPRESS THE PLETHORA OF EMOTIONS SO WELL. WHAT A WONDERFUL WRITER YOU ARE!
I STILL HAVE THE 2 PREGNANCY TESTS FROM WHEN I FOUND OUT I WAS PREGNANT WITH OUR MIRACLE 3 YEARS AGO. SO SEEING YOUR 3 MADE ME LAUGH! (AND FEEL LIKE MAYBE I’M NOT SO CRAZY FOR KEEPING MINE IN A ZIPLOCK.)
YOUR JOURNALING IDEA IS A GREAT ONE. I HAVE A MOMMY JOURNAL AND I HIGHLY RECOMMEND ONE FOR YOU TO WRITE TO YOUR NEW BABY. BEING PREGNANT AND EXPERIENCING MATERNAL LOVE IS AN OVERPOWERING AND OVEWHELMING BLESSING…TREASURE EVERY SECOND!
SORRY FOR THE CAPS…MY NOW 3 YEAR OLD MIRACLE BROKE THE CAPS LOCK KEY ON MY LAP TOP.
GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR HUSBAND AND YOUR BABY!
Congratulations Janice. I’m an advid FOX NEWS watcher. Grandmother of 12! Your life is going to change completly in just a few months. I can tell you now that you will be amazed that you can love someone so much.

CONGRATULATIONS! Your Mom sent me the great news this morning! Not sure if you remember me but I chummed around with your Mom in Ottawa, before I remarried and moved to Sault Ste Marie.
My daughter, Sara, is also expecting her first child -due on Feb 4th. I’m flying out there (Calgary) the last week in January to be with her when she delivers and staying for a month. It’s an exciting time, and…Chantelle (my step-daughter) is also pregnant again and due March 24th. She is the Mom to Nathan, our 5 year old grandson, and Stephen (my step-son) just had a baby boy, Anthony, who is 10 weeks old! Your Mom is going to enjoy being a Grandma!!!
Once again…congratulations to both you and Sean! Enjoy every moment of your pregnancy (even the not so fun parts – LOL)! Take care…. Hugs, Linda
Congratulations Janice and Sean! Really enjoyed your story, Janice.
Dear Janice,
Congratulations to you and Sean on your expectations of a baby. I know it’s good news for you especially with you fighting MS. I wish you and Sean the best.
BTW, if he/she becomes an Olympic athlete, which country will he/she represent, Canada or the USA?
Also, here are some facts about babies.
When I was born on November 3, 1968 (I’ll be the big 4-0 this year), I weighed 10 lbs 1 1/2 oz .
Dan Blocker, who played Hoss Cartwright on “Bonanza” weighed 14 lbs. at birth.
The Guinness World’s Record was set on February 20, 1924, when Mrs. J. P. Haskin of Arkansas gave birth to a 27 lbs. baby, and I believe the largest living baby was in 1963 in Ankara, Turkey with a weight of 23 lbs. 4 oz. Break the record, JD! Only kidding.
Finally, a baby joke, This was from “Hee Haw”:
Archie Campbell: Roy, when my wife was in the hospital expecting a baby, I gave her “A Tale of Two Cities” to read, and she had twins. The next time she was expecting, she read “The Three Musketeers” and she had triplets.
Roy Clark: I’d better hurry.
Archie: What for?
Roy: My wife’s expecting a baby also and the book I gave her was “Birth of A Nation”!
Janice, I wish you, Sean, and the baby well.
Sincerely,
Jay Boyle
