Janice Dean the Weather Machine

Hello Gustav!

Hurricane Hunters have upgraded TD 7 to our next Tropical Storm.  Top winds were at hurricane force, but the winds at the surface clocked in at 60 mph, so we’ve got a very strong storm that will more than likely become a hurricane in next 12 to 24 hours.  The computer models are still very spread out on what to do with Gustav, so everyone who lives in the Caribbean, the southeast and the gulf need to be keeping close tabs on Gustav!

Here’s the track as of 2pm.  A new advisory and track will be out at 5pm.

Hurricane warnings are up for the southern portion of the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

Hey Janice,

I’m sure the people in Florida just love the idea of another storm heading their way! I just hope this time there are no idiots who try to kite surf in it! Maybe this one will curve out to sea.

We need to put Gustav on a leash and get him to go to an area (no FL) that could use some rain…

FL has had enough….

A state rapid response team is in Hawaii to try to contain a bee mite parasite.

The parasite is posing a threat to the island’s $4 million commercial honeybee industry and the island’s agriculture, officials said.

The parasite is a reddish-brown, crab-looking varroa mite.

It’s starting to look like a repeat of the ‘05 season for Florida. As a native Floridian (who has been in central TX for several years now) who has friends and family still there, I hope not. I can only house so many and my house is more than full right now. (My husband and I typically offer our home to my mom and grandma to evacuate to.)

Jennifer,

I’m glad your mom and grandma have a place to go when they evacuate, but that’s still a pain in the neck. At least you don’t have to deal with all that rain and I’m sure the people in Florida are praying that Gustav heads elsewhere. I hope your friends and family that are still in Florida didn’t have major problems with all the rain from Fay. Those rainfall totals are unreal.

Gustav sounds like a tummy problem you get when you eat too much popcorn. ;)

If anyone is at all interested, now that I’m back from vacation around the world, (thanks Margie), I’ve posted a new blog.

Comments always welcome.

chas,

You must be tired from your world travels, yet you wrote some really great comments on your blog. I don’t think that well when I’m tired! I agree totally with what you wrote; that’s why I’m tired of certain individuals and what they have to say. Thanks for sharing that.

Ms. Margie,

You are more than kind. Thank you.

I try and update every couple of days, but refuse to post if I have no muse, which happens at times, like when I am on vacation. ;)

I’m sure that the media surrounding the convention, or is that canonization of the one, will supply enough fodder for blogs this week.

Back a ways John posted the he disagreed with the Steele for VP thoughts. He called him and Obama both empty suits. I disagree, especially in regards with Obama. Calling Obama an empty suit is doing a disservice to coat hangers around the planet.

Steele is more conservative than McCain, better than Obama without a teleprompter. And as far as his loss running for Senate, he’s running in the Peoples Republic of Maryland for goodness sake. A state much like California has more red districts than blue, but still is dominated by Socialist in the cord wood vote around the Beltway and Baltimore.

OK, not a politics blog so I will shut up now. ;)

Have a great evening all.

JD,
Thanks for the updates on the tropical storm. I hope and pray that it will leave those poor people alone in Florida that got hurt so badly by Fay.
Chas, Thanks for the laugh. I got a huge chuckle out of the “empty suit” line. I found it humorous when watching Obama and Biden together at their press conference(or coronation according to MSNBC) that their shirt sleeves were rolled up exactly the same length. I wonder if they have a paid sleeve roller-upper on their staff that takes care of such matters. I guess it gives the term speaking off the cuff a whole new meaning.
I hope all had a great weekend! JB

Hi Janice!
Yes, I had poutine while I was in Ottawa along with cold Molsons at a pub. Whenever I drink beer in Canada, I think of the old Red Green show where the Possum lodge word game was being played and they were trying to get the guy to say “water”.

Red: Okay, this is something you drink everyday.

Dalton: Beer!

Red: No, No, this is something clear and tasteless.

Dalton: American Beer! ;-)

I do love my Canadian Kokanee and Molsons with the higher alcohol and actual taste. I brought back the Cinnamon spread you can only get in Canada along with a bottle of Canadian Mist and one big bottle of Quebec maple syrup. What do you miss that you have your friends and folks bring down to you? :-)

I didn’t have a beavertail but saw them sold. Thats elephant ears for the rest of us but the Canadians do not scrimp on the powdered sugar and cinammon! I’ll be back in the winter for a follow up so I’m going to try to skate the canal if the ice is there!

Oh, you can get the beavertail with Garlic and butter which I didn’t get the chance to try that one.

Next Time……Yum!! :-)

Fort Lauderdale authorities are checking the dental records of a body found Sunday afternoon to see if it is a South Florida woman who disappeared Thursday after seeking a restraining order against her husband.

Josephine Frenna, 51, vanished a day before she was scheduled to be in court for a hearing on the restraining order and a week after filing for divorce.

Along with normal first-day jitters and excitement, students in this tiny district started school Monday wondering which teachers might be toting firearms.

Several parents said they had no idea that employees of the K-12 school were allowed to carry concealed guns on campus until recent publicity about the school board’s policy, approved quietly last fall. They said they were upset that the rural community near the Oklahoma border had not been able to give input.

While some parents said they felt their children were safer, others opposed the plan, which appears to be the first of its kind nationwide.

The remnants of Tropical Storm Fay spread over a wide swath of the South on Monday, bringing heavy rain and wind from Georgia to Louisiana that many hoped would help land parched for months by drought conditions.

Floridians, meanwhile, continued to mop up floodwaters created by the storm that stuck around for a week and made a historic four landfalls, dumping more than 30 inches of rain along the central Atlantic coast. Republican Gov. Charlie Crist, dressed in blue jeans and a golf shirt, helped an elderly woman out of a boat that had taken her from her inundated home.

Speaking about popcorn, i wouldnt recommend eating too much of it, because of recent reports of the buttery flavoring ingredients causing lung ailments problems for many people.

I am sure you have all heard of that report a while back.

You have to wonder if Fay was a precursor for a really major hurricane to hit Florida. Fay soaked the sponge and now comes Gustav. I have a Baaaad feeling about number 7. tenten

Hey Chas,
I just took a look at Fay’s ‘paranormal’ storm path, and it was during the Olympics. Maybe Fay was doing her rendition of a Torch relay tour? Think about it.. tenten

Russia on Tuesday recognized the independence of two enclaves that have long sought to secede from neighboring Georgia. The action deepened strains with the West over the conflict in the economically vital crossroads of the Caucasus and roiled a broader debate over how to respond to separatist movements around the world.

The Russian decision was intended to consolidate its political and military gains in the two and a half weeks since it invaded Georgia after hostilities flared over the breakaway territory of South Ossetia, an ally of Moscow.
