Janice Dean the Weather Machine

Dr. Masters Blog

I know I’ve recommended him before, but if you’re interested in tropical cyclones, and prognostications from one of the best guys in the business, you should check out Dr. Jeff Master’s blog from www.wunderground.com

http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/comment.html?entrynum=1042&tstamp=200808

He is great with historical information,  and the “science” behind the storms formation and hurricane tracks – from timing, to intensity to actually putting a percentage on which forecast track he likes the best.   I read his blog every morning along with the National Hurricane Center’s forecast as we try to bring you guys the very latest and the most easy to comprehend forecast throughout the day.

This will be a very big deal if the storm moves into the Gulf of Mexico.  I know I’m going to hear a lot of “STOP CRYING WOLF”…however, I would much rather get angry emails from hundreds of  people if it makes one person out there prepare their plan if and when a hurricane ever does end up in their backyard.

Hope you guys are doing well — it’s going to be a busy next few days as this storm gets closer to the U.S.  I’ll keep you posted on all things Gustav here.

Hey Janice,

I think you do a great job of covering these storms. I think it’s important that people have plenty of time to prepare for the possibility of a nasty storm. If they choose to be ignorant and ignore the warnings, then they only have themselves to blame if something bad happens to them. (I have that horrible image in my mind of that crazy kite surfer slamming head first into a building in Florida who obviously didn’t take Fay seriously.) Keep up the good work–there will always be stupid people in the world.

I say do your job to the best of your ability and let the chips fall where they may…

Angry emails from upset people no doubt is an occupational hazard of your job….

All jobs have some sort of occupational hazard….Mine is dealing with upset and disgruntled customers….I do my job and be as helpful as I can and I move on to the next customer…If people dont like what we have to offer at our farm I encourage them to go elsewhere where they will be happy….

Those who are get angry or upset have the chose not to listen and tune it out….If that is what they want/need to do they will do it….

Is it coming toward Louisiana? I cant find anywhere that will tell us the suggested path…
Lea

Comment by Janice Dean

There is a chance the storm will head to Louisiana Lea – but we won’t know for sure really until later on this week…when the forecast track is fine tuned a little further.

Hey Deb,

If that guy says he’ll wind sail again then his head trauma must have been pretty bad–or he’s even more stupid than I thought! Like I said–there will always be stupid people in the world.

Margie (hoping to get some of Deb’s rain)

Monkeys can experience the joy of giving in much the same way as humans do, U.S. researchers reported on Monday.

Tests in capuchin monkeys showed the animals consistently chose to share food with another monkey if given the option, suggesting they are capable of empathy.

Comment by Janice Dean

Yes, I feel like a bit of a monkey today…

Court documents show the mother of a missing Florida toddler wanted to give the girl up for adoption before she was born. Documents released by prosecutors Monday show Casey Anthony’s mother insisted that she keep the child.

Today’s trivia…………..this is the fifth time the name Gustav has been used for an Atlantic tropical cyclone.

Hurricane Gustav struck Haiti on Tuesday and sent global oil prices soaring on fears it could become “extremely dangerous” even before it reaches the Gulf of Mexico.

The hurricane roared ashore with top sustained winds near 90 mph (145 kph) at about 1 p.m. EDT, about 10 miles west of the city of Jacmel and 40 miles from the capital of Port-au-Prince. Heavy rains pelted the area, bending palm trees and kicking up the surf, but there were no immediate reports of flooding or damage.

Hi All!!

The storm has us busy too! Predictions are basically guesses Janice, but I know all the mariners appreciate the work you and others do. They are a tough bunch but always hold the motto: “Forewarned is Forearmed”. They will adjust routes and speeds accordingly with the info they get. No warnings listed at the loop yet but some shippers are getting cargos on and preparing to leave ahead of Saturday. Some are speeding up to get in and unload and get back out ahead of the storm. Mariners near the storm are saying it’s getting ready to howl so they are expecting a good storm.

Comment by Brad

Tropical Storm Gustav was losing steam early Wednesday as it moved through the Caribbean a day after hitting Haiti as a hurricane.

But the storm could regain hurricane strength later in the day or on Thursday once it clears Haiti, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.
