Janice Dean the Weather Machine

Wind-chilly!

Well, it looks like much of the country will be feeling winter a few weeks before it officially arrives.  We have a pretty impressive polar plunge that’s going to dig down into the Southern Plains.    The  month of December could bring that heating bill up a little more than some of us planned!   A system diving in from Canada (Clipper) will usher in very  cold air, and a the same time bring several inches of snow across the Northern Plains, Upper Midwest and Great Lakes.  Brisk winds will accompany the storm, and this could make travel pretty treacherous as the snow gets blown around making roads slippery and reducing visibility.

Our own Nancy Drew on the blog (Deb from TN)  figured out the curse of the “smiley faces”.  It appears that if you use these sometimes :) when you post, the comment doesn’t go through.  I seem to recall a few months ago on one of the other blogs, there was a problem with a poster that used dozens of smiley faces, and it actually did something crazy to the whole system.  So, as much as we love the smileys, maybe we should retire them for a while.  I’m also having problems uploading photos/cartoons, so I think it’s just a wordpress issue.  I’ve alerted the blog techs yet again, and we’ll see what they come up with.

And in other news, my husband and I went to our first official baby class last night, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised how much great information I got out of it.  The teacher was wonderful, and very informative.  Some of the moms and dads in the class were a little wacky.  When we were practicing breathing exercises, a couple of the dads broke out in hysterical laughter!  I wanted to throw something at them!  What are we, in kindergarten??  The teacher kind of smiled and said “Ah, there’s always a few in every class!”   We had a quick bathroom break in the middle of the class,  and every one of us moms-to-be  made a mad dash to the 3 different restrooms available.  I couldn’t believe some of the rude fathers that decided their bladders were more important than the ladies carrying their sons/daughters!  Thank goodness my husband wasn’t with me in line when one of the dads-to-be decided to take his sweet time in the bathroom ahead of me while I had my legs crossed, biting my lip – and ready to just pee  the floor!  (Sorry – it’s true!!!)

After I got back to my seat, my husband asked why it took so long.  I hesitated to  point out out the rude male bathroom hog because I knew my Irish-Italian husband would’ve caused an incident right then and there.  I just felt sorry for his wife who looked like she’s spent her whole marriage waiting in line for the bathroom at home.

Ok.  That’s it for now.  Thanks for being patient with the blog issues!  A day without smiley faces is just not right!!

The weather in Atlanta has been very cold this week but promises to be a beautiful sunny afternoon. I’m ready for it.

Those inconsiderate dads will get their pay back one day as they get older!! I promise.

JD,
Happy to hear that your baby class went well and was informative. There is NO excuse for the behavior of those men(a very sorry excuse for one) that hogged the bathroom. There are many insensitive idiots in the world and I try to never allow them to dictate my mood. That is easier said than done, especially when biting your lip, crossing your legs waiting for the bathroom. Just thank your lucky stars you are married to an understanding gentleman like Sean(also a fellow Irishman, always a good thing to be!). Have a great day. JB

JD,

Good morning from Denver. 23 and snow flurries this morning.

I just remember when the doctor had a meeting for all the parents having children, he explained all the options of drugs or not. He wasn’t amused when I asked what drugs he had for the men during the childbirth. I guess that’s just my sick sense of humor. He did kick me out of the room when I almost passed out watching him administer the epidural needle.

Hang in there.

Morning Janice and all…

Its about 40 out ….And since its December it can SNOW now …..This New England gal wont mind…

Sounds like your found the baby class worth your time sans the bathroom incident….There are some behaviors and manners (or lack there of) that simply make no sense to the point that trying to understand it is just an trip down aggrivation lane!…

No smilies? UGH….I LOVE those things…Its gonna be hard to remember not too….

Not to mention that I know sometimes my way of writing needs to have emoticons to prevent misunderstandings of tone and accidental toe-stepping (frown) …. Oyyyyy this may not be good…

This could be like walking in a virtual mine-field….(another frown)…

Well maybe it could be a good thing in that it may force me to think about how I present what my logical/analytic mind is thinking…. (wink, smile)

Hey Janice,
I’m glad you got some useful information out of your baby class. I’m glad you’re married to a good man because some of those other guys sound like jerks! Like Frankie said, one day they’ll get their pay back. I try not to let people like that bother me but sometimes you just want to smack them upside the head!

It was cold in Cumberland this morning but we’re supposed to have a nice mild afternoon. We’ll see if that happens. I hate cold weather but I guess I better get used to it since it sounds like we’re in for a cold winter around here.

I’ve been enjoying an international flavor to my Christmas music this morning. I started out with Tommy Korberg along with the Oslo Gospel Choir. Tommy is a popular Swedish artist with a great voice. It’s a great CD because it has some beautiful arrangements & isn’t too upbeat. Now I’m in an upbeat mood so I put on one of my Latin CD’s. (I needed my yearly dose of Feliz Navidad!) There’s a great version of The Little Drummer Boy (El Tamborilero) by an artist named Raphael that I really like. Since I know more Spanish than Swedish, I can sing a long with the Latin one a lot easier! Although I sing even worse in Swedish or Spanish than I do in English! I tried singing along with some music last night but I was so congested that I could hardly breathe–which is not a good thing. Oh well, at least I can still listen to music if I can’t sing along with it.

I’m running out of characters so I’ll shut up. Have a great day!

Hey Janice,

I am glad you had a positive experience at your baby class…except for the jerk hogging the bathroom. I could just shake the living daylights outta ppl like that. But I am a lady, and wouldn’t lower myself…but it’s the thought that counts. ha (insert wink).

Sun is shining bright here in my hood..almost all the snow has melted away…and the temp is currently 45 and climbing…all the way to 50 (maybe).

Too bad about the smiley face issue… I was starting to get a bit addicted. (insert big toothy grin smiley).hehe

Have a great Hump and Bump Day..

Nancy Drew signing off..I am on a new case “Why do jerks Hog the bathrooms, while preggy ladies gotta go”.

Janice

Make up a sign “Bathroom Closed” and put it on the door when you get there.

We had 24 with heavy frost this morning. Our morning dog park group are discussing buying a propane heater for us. It’s really cold sitting there in the mornings.

It’s 53 now and sunny.

Hey everyone.

Ok, Janice. Here’s the scoop on the epidural. When I had Elizabeth back in May, the epidural stuff was in a little box that attached to the IV stuff. I was able to keep tabs on it, and when either the nurses or I noticed that it was getting low, all they had to do was reload. Not a big deal. Now with Kyle 6 years ago it was a different story, and I had the epidural wear off on me TWICE. I love the advances that they have made in the last 6 years. When I was in labor with Elizabeth, I could sip my water and coke (to keep the withdrawal away) all I wanted. Not with either of the boys!

Hope that helps.

I hope you can get the blog hiccups cured.

Hey Janice,

Isn’t technology wonderful? All these glitches with the blog are a pain in the neck but at least it hasn’t completely crashed. Hopefully they’ll get things worked out soon. At least we can write in with encouragement for you!

Hey Gang,

I hope everyone is having a great day. I did a little more online Christmas shopping this morning. I took advantage of a great sale & free shipping from JC Penney and got a gift for a friend and a couple tops for myself. (One turned out to be only $5.99–I like that!) I’ll have another toy to play with when I get home–I think. The package looks like it’s sealed so I might not be able to cheat & open it up. Along with the fire engine for my nephew, I ordered a set of officially licensed FDNY walkie talkies for him, too. I got a notice that they were delivered this morning. My little guy will be the best equipped 2 year old future firefighter in his neighborhood! I could have gotten him a fire engine that actually squirts water, but I didn’t think my brother and sister-in-law would be very happy about that! I love shopping for kids! Last year when I told my mom how much my friend Susanna’s kids love the things I get for them, she said that’s because I think like a kid. (I don’t know if that’s good or bad!) I hope they like the microscope set I’m giving them this year.

It’s sunny and 48 here in Cumberland. Unfortunately, it’s almost dark by the time I get off work so I won’t be able to enjoy the sunshine.

Take care,
Margie

I bought 3 Midland Weather Radios today as Christmas gifts.

Comment by Margie Gacki

Hey Don,

A weather radio is a great practical gift. I think everyone should have one. You just reminded me that I have to reprogram mine. I had a problem with it and the alarm kept going off so I unplugged it and took the backup battery out. I hope it was a temporary problem. Otherwise, I’ll be buying myself a weather radio for Christmas!

Hey Janice , not sure if you got my post on a previous blog, but just wanted to check if you had gotten the postcard and xmas card i mailed to you from CA a couple of weeks ago, i had a awesome thanksgiving with my family , and made the most of the weather as it is freezing here in London, thats the first thing i noticed when we got in yesterday afternoon from the awful over night flight, it was so bad like an E ticket at Disneyland!, poor karen was sick throughout the flight, glad to hear your doing ok , caught you a couple of times on FNC , on the tv in the hotel room, we got in town just as the fires were being contained thank god, but it certainly was good to be back in the u.s for a couple of weeks, sorry to hear about your babay class restroom nightmare, arrrgggghhh!!!!!!!!!, i would shoved the guy out of the way to get in the restroom , especially in your current well being, some people are just plain rude, heck i would peed on his shoes or something, hehehe!, oh well take care and a big hi to all our bloggers, including dawn marie!

Hey Janice,

Glad to hear the class was informational.

As far as that rude guy goes oh one day his kid wil be one to be very disrespectful and rude to him. And he’ll wonder why.

Heard 1-3 inches snow blower here I come again. Its not the cold I mind goodness knows if your born north of Tennessee youre going to get used to alot of cold weather. No its the wind chill thats the killer.

Heres something I learned through oh living everyday. When you sew rudeness and bad things in general you will get back bad things. But sow Good and what you get back are good positive things

Hi Weather Friends!
Wenchie, I vote with Guilluame (on the movie discussion from the previous thread) that Netflix is a very good service. Don’t know if you’re aware, but they now have a lot of movies and tv shows available for watching instantly on your computer. My son is also able to use a new XBox 360 service to interface with Netflix and play movies directly on his television – at no charge! I’m on the 5 at a time plan and can’t say enough about it.
Interesting day. I went to my dermotologist today to have a “thing” removed from my eyelid and a mole check (my Dad had skin cancer and I grew up in Florida so I have this done every year). He saw four moles he wanted to remove, but only removed two of them. Why not all four?? Because my insurance only allows two at a time. I have to wait two weeks, then can have the other two removed. How nuts is that???? Do you know why they would have this policy, medical librarian friend???
Have a good evening All. I’m meeting my dear friend, the one whose wedding I went to a couple of weekends ago, for an early dinner at Chilis. I’ll eat some chips and salsa for all of you!! (Smiley face!)

Janice,
Is there a program that you are on regularly? I will have Fox News on in the morning and then see that you were on in the afternoon, or vise versa. My schedule has changed in the last month or so and I am not watching at the same times that I was before.

Also if you are interested in a weather related web site, I found this one from my home state of Michigan. The guy has a camera showing his side yard and the snow and also wildlife, snowmancam . com, hopefully by putting the spaces between the dot it will not end up in the vortex.

Hey Gina,

As a medical librarian, I have to state this disclaimer: I may be a medical librarian but I can’t begin to explain the logic that the insurance companies use in establishing their coverage policies! I could see them establishing limits if it’s just a cosmetic thing, but if your doctor felt it was necessary to remove them, then only God knows why they limit it to two at a time! It seems like the crazier the idea, the more likely insurance companies are to come up with them!

Your dinner sounds good! I went out shopping after work and just brought a frozen dinner home with me and that doesn’t sound nearly as good as Chili’s! We need to get one of those around here. Well, now I’m hungry so I better go eat!

Have a great evening.

Hey Gang,

I’m putting this in a separate post because I knew I’d run out of space in the last one. I have another Christmas shopping story to share. I decided to order my niece something from discoverthis.com. It’s too bad I didn’t think of it yesterday when I ordered the other stuff so I could have saved on shipping–oh well. Anyway, I found a Young Scientists set with 3 kits in it: Weather; Solids, Liquids, Gases; and Volcanoes. She’ll get to make a volcano, which should be rather interesting! The set has won all kinds of awards so it sounds like a good one.

What I really want to share is one of the categories of kits that they have. I didn’t see this yesterday. I bet everyone knows someone who would love this: Gross, Yucky and Disgusting Science Kits. Somehow I don’t think my niece would like a kit called “Blood, Bones and Body Bits”! Hopefully she’s too delicate for that!

Well, since I’m hungry I better get my mind off of body bits and get something to eat! Have a great evening everyone.

NWS in Des Moines issued a winter weather advisory for our area from midnight last night to noon today. It called for 3-5 inches of snow. Most locales around here got about an inch, and the advisory was cancelled around 6 a.m. We get a lot of these false alarms in the winter months. A lot of people don’t take them seriously because they miss so badly and so often. I’m no meteorologist. I’m sure it’s tough to make these forecasts, but I wish their record was a little better.

Talk to AJ Ms. Janice, wordpress is a pain, no way around it. Every time I think I solve a problem it makes another.

OK, jumping up and down, legs crossed is borderline TMI…lol

Just use the basic smiley faces and you post shouldn’t be effectedc. I know most of these come from the wrodpress list, surprise, they lied…lol

Have a great evening all.

Growing up where I did in Berwyn and Cicero just outside Chicago during the 1940’s and 1950’s, many of my neighbors were Irish and/or Sicilian. Cicero was where Al Capone lived.

In fact, I’m a mutt — one-fourth Irish, one-fourth English, one-fourth German, and one-fourth Czech. When I see men behaving badly toward women, I become very angry very quickly.

Today, I was standing on the bus when a pregnant woman boarded. I thought of you, Janice. The students from Venice High were too rude (as they always are) to offer her a seat. I politely asked a Mexican-American teenager sitting by me to give his seat to the pregnant woman. He ignored me. I asked him again. He still ignored me.

My Irish kicked in. I had him standing so fast that neither he nor his buddies couldn’t believe it! I then motioned to the pregnant woman to take the seat. She smiled, said “Thank You,” and sat down.

The rude teenager and his buddies looked away from me until they got off the bus about a mile later.

I had a successful signing at a mall in Newport News, VA tonight (12 books), but I’ll tell you
it was a miracle because the recession really is keeping Christmas shoppers away. It was
pretty dead in there. Too bad for all of us.

Thanks,
Tony
