Janice Dean the Weather Machine

The Heat is on!

Good morning!

Well, the heat is still the big weather story across the U.S.  Heat advisories are up across the Midwest, Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi valley where records could be broken, and temperatures will feel over 100 degrees with the humidity factored in.

Meanwhile, strong to severe storms will fire up over the Northern Plains and into the Great Lakes.  We won’t have a huge tornado event here, but hail, wicked winds, heavy rain and lightning could be a concern here.  There’s also the chance of some thunder-boomers across the Gulf Coast, Florida and Four Corners region.

I’m a little sleepy today.   Matthew was up many times last night…the poor little guy is teething I think…lots of drool, chewing, fussiness…and he’s officially 5 months today!  :)   Cute as ever!

Hey Janice,

I love how you counterbalanced the heat/stormy weather news with a picture of that little cutie of yours! Happy 5 months birthday to Matthew! It’s hard to believe it’s been that long already. Thanks for posting that picture because it’s just what I needed after a frustrating incident at work. Little Matthew brought a smile to my face–great therapy!

I hope you can stay awake today. I didn’t sleep well last night either, but I can’t blame it on a 5 month old! I don’t know what my problem was. I hope you have a better night tonight.

We have another beautiful sunny morning this morning. It was nice and cool but it’s supposed to get pretty warm today. At least we don’t have the triple digit temperatures and high humidity some places are having so I won’t complain.

Hi to all the other bloggers out there! I hope everyone has a great day.

Five months old today!

“Where does the time go?”

That’s what my Uncle Bob and I always ask each other. Then we think of something that happened long ago, often in our hometown when we were young. He is 14 years older than I.

Uncle Bob and his buddies each enlisted in the Navy on their 17th birthdays. Some of them served on the same ship, the U.S.S. Bennington, during WW II. They still kid — and brag — about their escapades in San Diego and Honolulu.

I was looking at my mother’s “baby book” the other day. It’s heartwarming for me to see the things she saved and the little notes she wrote about me when I was in my first year. How I wish our memories went back that far, but my earliest memories begin when I was three or four.

What stands out so clearly after all these years is how much my parents loved me. Although both have been gone for a long time, I think of them every day….

Comment by Janice Dean

Hey George. It’s heartwarming to hear how fondly you speak of your parents, and they obviously raised a very kind considerate son!

Hey Margie,

I hope all has settled down at work for you now. It’s a beautiful morning here as well, but I can feel the humidity. I knew it could stay away forever how I truly loathe it though.

Hey Janice,

I’m sure Matthew is pretty uncomfortable right now, no doubt to two front upper and lower teeth are working their way out, poor little guy. :-( Keep lots of those cold chewey toys for him in the frig.

A little nint (and it’s not an endorsement) liquid Advil worked wonders for my daughter when she was teething and spiked a fever because of it. Boy how it dropped her fever in an instant.

Comment by Janice Dean

Hey Bill! Yup, cold chewy toys are at the ready! And thanks for the advice about liquid advil! I have some, and will use it when we need to!

Teething brought back memories. Doctor said to rub brandy on there gums. I found if I drank the brandy it worked a lot better. lol

Comment by Janice Dean

LOL Don! I’ll keep some handy for mom! ;)

Hey Janice,

Teething huh….my kids and grandkids loved those little chewy teethers that you put in the freezer…I think it numbs the gums a bit and gives them some relief. And that baby oral-gel works pretty good too. And as far as the drool..BIBS!! Sorry you are sleepy…you can get some rest in 17years and 7 months..haha Just kidding… ;)

Gonna be another very warm day here… right now it’s a beautiful morning, temp is 78, with a very nice breeze. Very Pleasant.

Take care and stay cool, (and awake),
Deb

BTW…thanks for adding me on your Facebook.

Comment by Janice Dean

Hey Deb! We go through so many bibs I had to buy half a dozen just the other day! HA! Especially when I feed him oatmeal!

Comment by TnDeb

Don…you gave me my first laugh of the day! Thanks I needed that! :)

Hey Gang,

Have you ever gotten news that leaves you feeling like you’ve been hit by a truck? Well, I just go that kind of news about a dear friend and colleague, Michele. I talked to someone I work with who knows Michele well. Michele was just diagnosed with ovarian cancer (probably stage 4) that has metastasized to her lungs and colon. How’s that for wonderful news?! Michele was in the hospital a couple weeks ago with what she thought was asthma but it wound up being related to the cancer. I’ve known Michele longer than anyone else in Cumberland and I love her so much. We’ve always worked so well together. I knew another woman who worked for the same agency (Kathy) for a little while before Michele came on the scene at the organization and it broke my heart when Kathy died back in 2002 from metastatic breast cancer. Michele is so much younger than Kathy and now I may lose her, too. Add that to my friend Alicia who died last year and my brother who died back in 1987 and I’ve had enough. Cancer stinks!

I just want to encourage everyone to have regular checkups/screenings that are appropriate for your age group. Some cancers can’t be easily detected, but some can and it is far better to catch them early. That’s your medical advice today from Dr. Gacki!

Now I feel like having another good cry. It’s a good thing I brought in a new box of soft tissues because I think I’ll need them.

Hey Margie. Very sorry to hear about your news. I lost a dear friend to cancer just a few months ago, and he was my age…I think about him every day. I hope you’re feeling better today.

Lovely day, if a bit hot today. Kids attended bible school while I read a biography of Julius Caesar
at Panera, sipping my mocha.

Going to do a reading of local authors at B&N in downtown colonial Williamsburg. They’ve finally
gone to a location besides the local public library where they read to each other. It’s good to have
customers around! Maybe they have my paperback of Hurricane of Independence available. It
is hitting bookstores around the country.

Later,
Tony

Hey Tony. Hope that reading was indoors! I love going to book readings. It’s very relaxing!

Afternoon folks, it’s nice and hot in the OV. Aprox 80-85 with some humidity, not too much in the way of a breeze.

I plan on going biking in an hour. It’s 120pm est. Yes I will wear my sunglasses, cap and drink water once I arrive.

Happy 5months Matthew. :)

JD you mention Matthew with “lots of drool, chewing, fussiness” sounds like my night. :)

Comment by Janice Dean

Hey Peter! Good man! You know the drill about being outside in the heat! sunglasses, hat and lots of water! Just remember the sunscreen too!

Margie,

I am very sorry to hear about your friends diagnosis. I will keep her in my prayers and you too my friend. Cancer does Suck!!!

Comment by Peter Plumley

Hi Margie, I’m so sorry to hear about your friend. A good cry can be almost the best advice a person can give another. The cancer stuff is beyond vile and evil. I believe everyone has it, but something releases it into your system, we need to find what triggers it.

To quote Glen Frey the heat is on in Chicago today saw one report saying 97 today I believe it. Matty is looking great there Janice

Comment by Janice Dean

Thank Kelly! Yeah, I hope the heat breaks soon — looks like it will across the Midwest this weekend…

Evening folks, got back from my ride, I did find a breeze on the way in, which was nice, wasn’t all that bad. 85-90 out. This evening it was nice 70, humidity appeared to disappear. AC is on here, comfy.

“The Heat is On!” by Glenn Frey (1984) was featured in Beverly Hills Cop and also on Miami Vice.

How many of you remember?

The Eagles are my favorite group of all time!

That was 3rd grade for me, or maybe fall of 4th grade. I so remember that song. It was soo cool.

JD…for the teething, the baby oragel tastes horrible. When Scooter was teething, I had wisdom tooth issues and used some on myself. I would not wish that stuff on anybody. (I ended up using Jack Daniels and Shiner Bock so that I could eat occasionally.) I would get Hyland’s Teething Tablets. I’ve used them with all of my kids so far and they work pretty quickly. 2-3 under the tongue is all it takes.

Margie…I am so sorry to hear about your friends. Cancer definitely sucks. One of my mom’s friends lost her older daughter (who was my age) when we were 19 to cancer.

The heat is definitely here. Today we smashed the previous record high of 102 with a whopping 105. More of the same for tomorrow.

I go back to my OB tomorrow, so I’ll have a baby update then. I did get on the scale at home last week and found out that if it’s accurate, I’ve lost about 25 lbs. this year so far.

Comment by Janice Dean

Hey Jennifer! I did get those Hylands tablets, and I’ve heard great things about them..hopefully they will do the trick! Keep cool Jennifer!

Oh, and I didn’t get to tell you guys! Friday night, I did get my date night! First one in nearly 2 years! Jason and I went and ate Mexican food at a restaurant downtown. Of course since I have next to no appetite, at least half of mine came home and Kyle was more than happy to help with the leftovers the next day. On Saturday night, we took Kyle and Elizabeth down to the Texas Reds Steak and Grape festival (basically, lots of steak and wine, but I didn’t have the wine). Robert Earl Keen was the headline entertainment. He is a legend around here, having gone to A&M, and was friends with Lyle Lovett (the former Mr. Julia Roberts), who also went to school at A&M. We stayed for part of his concert, but by then, it was almost 11 and the kids were worn out. Scooter didn’t even go with us because he was worn out from day camp (in the heat from 8-4 all week) then his Boy Scout troop went camping Friday night and most of Saturday. He was one tired puppy. He came in, grabbed a few things, then went to my dad’s house to crash.

The biggest downside to the festival was the parking. They did have a park and ride, but parents who have little ones who have to be in car seats (which will be anyone under 8 and 4′7″ as of 9/1) can’t realistically do that without breaking the law. So, we talked to them, and next year there may be special parking set aside for parents with young ones, especially those with strollers!

George, I remember. I think the question is, do we WANT to remember that song?

Comment by Tony Williams, Author, "Hurricane of Independence"

JD – by the way, if you think he’s teething, he is! Babies aren’t that complicated and mommies
have a great instinct for these things. Look at the signs and “symptoms,” and you’ll know what
is right.

Jennifer, you’re just a youngster!

It is hard for me to believe that a quarter century has passed since “The Heat Is On” was so popular. “Miami Vice” was a terrific TV shop, the first to be broadcast in stereo. I bought a special TV stereo receiver that I connected to my stereo system so I could hear it.

“Beverly Hills Cop” cracked me up. When I moved to Los Angeles in 1990, one of the first friends I made was Judge Reinhold, who starred in the film with Eddie Murphy. I met Judge through some mutual friends. A few months later, Judge introduced me to an aspiring actor named Brendan Fraser. Both Judge and Brendan helped me feel comfortable in my first year in this enormous city.

Judge and some others I knew in the early 1990’s eventually moved to Santa Fe, NM. Brendon, as far as I know, is still here. His career soared throughout the 1990’s and during this decade. I’m happy he has done so well.

I saw Don Johnson, star of “Miami Vice” in a yoga class in 1994, but I never met him.

Hi George, I remember the Beverly Hills Cop movies and enjoy watching them every once in awhile when they are on some channel like Peachtree or TBS etc. I have a VHS copies of them somewhere, guess I should get some dvds of the movie classics. :) Judge Reinhold always has been a talented actor.

The remake of Miami Vice (movie) a couple of years ago was just poor, plus too many ad placements.

Off to bed for this person. It’s 203am est.
