Good morning everyone!
It’s been a quiet start to the week since we are deep into Sotomayor Hearings. I am on standby once they take a lunch break, but otherwise, I’ve got my feet up at work! (But don’t tell anyone, ok?)
There is the possibility of strong to severe storms across the Upper Midwest today and then the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley tonight and tomorrow. Hail, winds, heavy rain and maybe an isolated tornado could cause problems over this region in the next 24 hours.
And another day of excruciating heat over the southern plains. I had a friend visit me from Houston yesterday, and she can’t remember the last time it was this hot for such and extended length of time. Heat advisories are still up for the Arklatex up into Kansas and Missouri.
Meanwhile, I had a great little visit to Ottawa over the weekend. My best friend Neera was celebrating her…24th (wink wink) birthday, so I got to see her and her family. My mom got to spend time with her little grandson which was really great as well. Matthew was a champ on the plane ride back and forth. People were commenting on what a well behaved baby he was! I am so proud of him.
Here’s a few of the pictures we took of Grandma, Neera and her kids Marcus and Sophia with Matthew!
Talk to you soon!
JD

Hey Janice,
Great pictures! The kids look like they really enjoyed hanging out with Matthew. I’m glad you had a great time in Ottawa and that your little guy behaved himself on the plane. That makes the trip pleasant for everyone. I hope you had nice weather for your trip.
Even though it was hot on Sunday, I’m glad we didn’t have triple digit temperatures on my trip. Since there was plenty of water around, I guess we could have jumped in the river at St. Michaels if we got too hot. St. Michaels is on the Miles River not too far from the Chesapeake Bay. The folks in St. Michaels commented that there usually were twice as many boats anchored in the harbor but with the economy the way it is, things have been slow. There were plenty of fancy yachts there, however. The restaurant we ate in was right on the dock and we had an outside table. We watched the yachts pull up to the dock. It must be nice to be able to go for a boat ride and pull right up to the dock for lunch.
Speaking of lunch, I’m getting hungry! I’m sure the hospital isn’t serving nice fresh seafood like we had over the weekend. We got to enjoy some great food over the weekend but now it’s back to reality. I hope they have something good in the cafeteria because I’m hungry.
I hope everyone has a great afternoon!
Margie
I love eating lunch near the water…it’s so calming! Sounds like you had a great trip Margie. Looking forward to seeing pics!
Great to have you back, Janice!
I like the photo of your mom with Matthew and you. It’s great to see three generations in a photo!
Neera is gorgeous! Post more photos of her any time you wish!
I watched “The Visitor” (2008) on cable yesterday, starring one of my favorite actors, Richard Jenkins. Not only is this a fine contemporary drama set in New York City but its soundtrack is incredibly well done. I haven’t heard a better one in years. It was composed by Jan A.P. Kaczmarek.
If you don’t recognize Richard Jenkins name, you’ll recognize him immediately. Perhaps you saw him playing Nathaniel Fisher on HBO’s “Six Feet Under.” I remember first seeing him in one of the funniest movies of the mid-1990’s, “Flirting with Disaster” starring Ben Stiller, Patricia Arquette, Téa Leoni, Mary Tyler Moore, George Segal, Alan Alda and Lily Tomlin.
You can read more about Richard Jenkins and see his photo on Wikipedia:

Jenkins received an Academy Award nomination for his role in “The Visitor.”
Having said all this, I’ll be quiet about the intriguing post 9/11 plot to this movie, which will grab you from beginning to end. Don’t be distracted while you watch it.
I recently switched from Time Warner to Directv, which allows me to pause and rewind anything I watch and also to record anything digitally. I figured out how to use Directv with my VCR. Some of their tech people said it couldn’t be done; others said it could. Go figure!
Heya George
I saw the Visitor when it first came out. I’m a big fan of Richard Jenkins…have been since 6 Feet Under!
Hi all –
Wow, Janice — you and your mom and Matt look alike! Great family photos of three generations together — thanks for sharing!
Hey Julia…most people say matthew looks like my hubby, so I appreciate your perspective too!
Hi Janice.
I hope we get to see you sometime today – I’m starting to nod off with these hearings!
Ironic that the abortion issue has taken a back seat to others with this nominee though, except for the random guys in the back screaming stuff and getting carted off by security.
Oh, and your friend from Houston is right. We anticipate every summer getting a handful of days with triple digit temps, but this year it just keeps going on and on!!
Have a great day.
Hi Gina…Yes the hearings were a little….uhhhh….snoozy?
I’m hoping things cool off for you soon…don’t know how you’re dealing with it!
Afternoon all,
Though I posted on the other thread earlier, I thought I’d stop by again and say “Hello”.
Janice, the pictures are great. I too especially like the one of you and your Mom with Matthew. Also the one of Grandma and Matthew is very sweet too.
A little funny to share…I told my husband the other day that I feel I’ve now come full circle in this life. For the past 34 years, I’ve been know either as Dwane’s wife or as Eric’s, Nick’s or the twins’ mother. In the doctor’s office the other day I was asked by a young female radiologist if I was Katie Bug’s grandma. To which I, of course, happily answered “Yes”. Seems her daughter and my Katie take dance together from my daughter in law. I give up! I don’t know that I’ll ever have an identity of my own again. Think I’ll just go with the flow and appreciate the blessing of being linked to all these loved ones who bring so much joy to my life!
Enjoy your day!
Gwen
Hey Gwen! Great story! You’re right about being blessed with all the love in your family. My heart grows bigger and bigger everyday I think when I see my little guy!
George, thanks for your movie review. I actually have that title on my list of Netflix movies to watch. Sounds I should move it up to the top!!

Gwen in Mississippi:
Nice to know you are Katie Bug’s grandma. I don’t have any children, so I’ll never know what it’s like to be a grandpa. You are very blessed.
Ironically, my cousin Bill on my father’s side sent me a photo a few weeks ago of our great-great-great grandfather taken in Birmingham, England around 1900. Our grandfather (an earlier George Spink) was born there in 1886 and emigrated here with his parents and brother in 1900.

Sounds like you have an impressive family tree George!
Evening folks, yes the stranger returns.
Just been busy the last week or so. I do check into Facebook, and have offered some coments to our friend JD.
It was nice today (Tuesday), Saturday was off and on rain. The other morning, don’t recall which morning it was, but we had thunder, lighting, power outages all before 8am. Lots of fun, made watching Fox+Friends hard to see with the dish cutting in and out.
Glad to see you and Matthew made it to Canada.
He needs to go check out the new Tim Hortons too, along with his mother, & dad.
The folks on the plane didn’t realize they were flying with the Weathermachine and the future President of News Corp.
Hey Peter! I checked out the Tim’s across from Penn Plaza…Very tiny, but the coffee was good…hopefully they do well here in NYC! I had a few cups of Tim Horton’s coffee when I was back home over the weekend. I laughed out loud when you mention Matt being the future president of News Corp!
JD,
Happy to hear you had a great visit to Ottawa. Thanks for sharing the photos with us. Matthew just keeps growing and developing every time we see him. What a handsome young man(no surprise considering his gene pool!). It was 104 today and a predicted high of 103 tomorrow. It may go way down to the mid 90’s by Sunday. Can’t wait.
Speaking for many, I am sure, I would have much preferred seeing you provide some weather updates today, instead of the Sotomayor hearings which entailed many senators pontificating, yet saying nothing of substance. What else is new?? Hope all are doing well. JB
Hiya JB! I do hope you get down to the “cool” 90s this weekend! I just can’t believe its been so hot for so long! Senators Pontificating?? Say it aint so! hahah!
Hey Everyone,
Hot, hot, hot here in the Tidewater. Cooled down a bit with a late trip to Busch Gardens last night
for some water rides and roller coasters.
Watched some of the Sotomayor hearings yesterday and was not impressed at all. Gina, I think
one of the reasons you may have heard relatively little on the abortion issue is that the Republicans
are trying to assess her overall judicial philosophy and poke holes in it. They can do it on
affirmative action and abortion, but more generally on the idea that “feelings” and “experiences”
and “being a wise Latina woman.” They indicate a judicial philosophy that is activist and replaces
the law with whatever feelings you want it to in order to get the result that you want. I think her
way of deciding cases is to think about the result she wants and squeeze it into the law somehow.
I also just wasn’t impressed by her explanation of all this. She hemmed and hawed and sounded
worse than Bill Clinton trying to explain one of his affairs. I wish she would boldly and proudly
defend her statements and writings rather than lamely trying to explain them away. If you really
think life experiences and your gender and ethnicity should be used in trying cases, then honestly
tell us that. That would be refreshing.
Have a good one,
Tony
Hey Tony…water rides sound like fun! I haven’t been in a water park in years…I bumped my head on one of those slides several years ago, and have been afraid to get on another slide ever since!
Confirmation hearings are now obsolete in my view. Havent been since Robert Bork. No nominee is going to be forth coming, both conservative and liberal.
I hold both parties, BOTH PARTIES, responsible for the deterioration of senate confirmation hearings.
I see no difference with how Sotomayor is handling the questions as compared to Alito and Roberts…..Just different way of approaching the Constitution.
But I find American citizens just as cemented and closed minded in their biases and views as politicians….and some times just as extreme….
But then that goes back to the Founding Fathers as well….Sometimes people think that the founding of the country w/her principles was some easy garden party…It wasnt..
It was very very contencious with bitter bitter agruments…
Not much has changed I guess…Just the issues are different…
But not the human emotions….or the human nature in the approach….
Tony and Dawn, perhaps the most interesting and relevant part of these hearings will end up being the testimony of the “real” people, such as the Ricci firefighter case plaintiffs. I too am very concerned that her “life experiences” shape and guide her decisions. I’m equally concerned about how often she has had her rulings overturned and think that should be emphasized more.
Dawn, I don’t think the hearings have been as contentious this go ’round but I think it’s because they see this as a done deal as long as she doesn’t melt down, as Sen. Graham said.
Any more news on your family’s tomato crop?? Are some of your other crops doing well enough to offset some of the potential losses?
Have a great day everyone. Hubby and I are getting ready to make a big breakfast before he leaves for several days of meetings in Beaumont, TX. Still hot . . . looking for to those lower temps you are predicting, JB!!
Gina…
I agree…Ricci and other’s testimony will be more of interest to me….And like you said, she most likely is going to be confirmed unless are real mess up occurs…Just like with Roberts and Alito and others….
Same process of Q&A with the same end result=Confirmation…No real difference other than they were conservatives and she is a liberal and their judicial approach to the Constitution…
The idea of unity I personally think is a fallacy…..People are just tooooo diverse to honestily be “Unified”….Human nature if anything prevents it.
Jude will be around today to look at the tomatoes…Not sure how many tomato plants we have lost so far….
Late blight only effects potatoes and tomatoes…nothing else so the other crops will be fine…
Can they offset the loss of the tomato crop? No…Tomatoes are a much bigger cash crop than the others with the exception of peppers and corn…but its not like people will buy more corn and more peppers simply because we may lose our tomatoes…
If we lose our tomato crop we will see a significant monetary loss….But we are farmers and we are a hearty breed….We know Mother Nature does her thing and we adjust accordingly…It may be sad but it wont be a tragedy or a disaster…
All it means is that we see a significant monetary loss and many of our customers will have to do without their homemade sauces for the next year….
No one will be dying and no one will be losing their job…
It’s all about perspective …
WHEN AND WHERE ON FOX ARE YOU ON THE AIR? I HAVE BEEN A FAN SINCE FIRST SEEING YOU ON THE IMUS SHOW..
JUST A FAN..
